CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Washington College junior outside hitter Kaitlyn Marino (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) has been named the HERO Sports D3Volleyball Hero of the Week. She was one of 10 nationwide nominees for the honor and won the fan vote with 39.44% of the vote.
Marino averaged 4.36 kills, 2.91 digs and 0.91 service aces in a 3-0 week for the Shorewomen last week. In a five-set win over Shenandoah on Saturday, she had career-bests of 24 kills, 20 digs and four aces as WC won six of the last seven points to turn a 14-11 deficit in the fifth set into a 17-15 win. She led all players in kills and aces and the team in digs. Against Notre Dame (Md.) on Saturday in a three-set win she had match-highs of 14 kills and four blocks, which tied her career-high, and had a team-high three aces and added nine digs as she hit .333. Last Tuesday (9/6), in a three-set sweep at Goucher, she had 10 kills to lead all players and added three aces to lead the squad.
The Shorewomen, who are 8-0 for the second time in team history (the 1978 team also started 8-0) opens Centennial Conference play at home tomorrow against 10-0 Gettysburg at noon. The Shorewomen will also play a non-conference home match against Rosemont tomorrow at 4 p.m. as part of a tri-match.
