Horan Named a Captain for the Second Time While Bentley and Geissberger Named Captains for the First Time
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Washington College volleyball head coach Jamie Leventry has named three captains for the 2017 season. The trio of seniors, defensive specialist Sarah Bentley (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown), middle hitter Alaina Geissberger (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) and setter Taylor Horan (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) will serve as captains for the Shorewomen this year. Horan is serving as a captain for the second consecutive year, while Bentley and Geissberger are serving as captains for the first time.
Bentley, who earned the squad's Most Improved Player last season, had career highs in digs (175), digs per set (2.06), service aces (27) and service aces per set (0.32) as she competed in all 25 matches in 2016, a career-best. Entering her senior season, Bentley has 382 digs, 247 assists and 52 aces in 63 career contests.
Geissberger led the team in hitting percentage (.262), solo blocks (25), assisted blocks (70) and total blocks (95) and was fourth in kills (165). In the Centennial Conference, she led the conference in assisted and total blocks, ranked fourth in solo blocks and eighth in hitting percentage. In 76 career matches, Geissberger has 393 kills, 210 blocks, 155 assisted blocks and 55 solo blocks while hitting .265.
Horan had 851 assists, 287 digs, 65 kills and 20 blocks in 2016 as she set personal bests in digs and kills as she played in all 25 matches in 2016. In the conference, she ranked third in assists per set (8.96), fourth in assists and had the most assists in conference-only matches (356). Horan had 14 double-doubles in 2016 and four matches of 20 or more digs. She enters her senior season third all-time in team history in assists with 2,519 and has also accumulated 754 digs, 137 kills and 49 aces in 76 all-time contests.
The Shorewomen open their 2017 season on September 1 when they travel to the DeSales Invitational where they will play Gwynedd Mercy at 5:00 p.m. and Baruch at 7:00 p.m.
