Utchen Tallies Team-High 13 Digs
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting Swarthmore hit .438 as the visiting Garnet downed host Washington College, 3-0, (25-8, 25-12, 25-19) on Tuesday night in a Centennial Conference volleyball match at the Cain Athletic Center. The Garnet improve to 10-4 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial, while the Shorewomen drop to 11-5 and 0-3 respectively.
The Garnet hit .565 in the first set en route to the 25-8 victory as the guests scored the first five points and never trailed in the opening set. An attack error by Washington clinched the first set for Swarthmore.
In the second set, a kill by Sarah Wallace broke a 4-4 tie and put the Garnet ahead for the remainder of the set and began a 6-1 run that put the visitors ahead 10-5 on an Alice Liu finisher. Liu completed the set with a kill.
Wallace put Swarthmore ahead for good in the third set with a kill to make it 4-3 and the Garnet would lead by as many as eight points on two occasions. A Sam DuBois kill ended the set and match.
Wallace led all players with 12 kills as Swarthmore had three players tally double figures in finishers. Chastity Hopkins and Bridget Scott both notched 10 kills for the Garnet. DuBois handed out 36 assists to lead all players, while Madison Heppe had 14 digs to lead all players.
For Washington, sophomore defensive specialist Audrey Utchen (San Ramon, Calif./Monte Vista) had 13 digs to lead the hosts, while freshman setter Taylor Horan (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) passed out 14 assists to lead the squad.
The Shorewomen will travel to Goucher for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference match on Thursday night.
