Utchen With 14 Digs To Tie For Match-High
HAVERFORD, Pa. – Host Haverford got a double-double from Kari Godbe on a match-high 15 kills along with 13 digs en route to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-9) victory over visiting Washington College at Gooding Arena in a Centennial Conference volleyball match on Thursday evening. The Fords improve to 21-7 overall and 6-4 in the conference, while the Shorewomen drop to 18-9 and 4-5 respectively. With the loss, Washington had its CC Tournament hopes come to an end.
In the first set after Washington won the first point on a kill by sophomore middle hitter Jess Daunoras (Shamong, N.J./Seneca), the Fords won 12 of the next 14 points to take a 12-3 lead on a kill by Godbe. Haverford would take the first set on an Elena Garcia kill.
The Shorewomen led 4-3 in the second set following an assisted block by junior middle hitter Sarah Beresik (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) and sophomore outside hitter Kristin Lee (Dayton, Md./River Hill), but Haverford scored the next five points to take an 8-4 lead on a bad set by the Shorewomen. The Shorewomen trailed 21-19 following a Daunoras finisher, but the Fords took the last four points of the set to win by six points. Haverford clinched it on a Nina Mutty kill.
Washington won the opening point of the third set on a Lee kill before the Fords won the next nine points to take a 9-1 lead on a WC attack error. Mutty clinched the set and match on a kill.
In addition to Godbe, Haverford got 12 kills from Meg O'Day as she hit .524 for the match and the team hit .319 in the win. Olivia Walsh had 19 assists to lead all players, while Abby Keller added 13 helpers for the Fords. Madison Fueling had 14 digs to tie for match-high and was one of four players to tally double figures in digs for the hosts. Along with Godbe, Jeanna Kenney had 13 digs, while Mutty chipped in with 11 digs.
Senior setter Lauren White (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) had 16 assists to lead WC. Freshman defensive specialist Audrey Utchen (San Ramon, Calif./Monte Vista) had 14 digs to tie Fueling for match-best in digs. Lee, senior right-side hitter Emily Hoyle (Santa Rita, Guam/Guam) and freshman hitter Rachel Baker (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) all had 10 digs.
The Shorewomen will conclude their 2013 season on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. against visiting conference rival Ursinus on Senior Day. Prior to the match, the team will recognize Hoyle and White.
