Green Terror Thwart Shorewomen In Four Sets

Lee Tallies Sixth Straight Double-Double In Defeat

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – McDaniel's Madeline Rose had a double-double with a match-high 22 digs and a team-best 15 kills as McDaniel downed host Washington College, 3-1 (20-25, 25-13, 25-16, 25-19), on Saturday afternoon at the Cain Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon in a Centennial College volleyball match.  The Green Terror improve to 18-5 overall and 7-2 in the conference, while the Shorewomen drop to 18-8 and 4-4 respectively.

Washington never trailed en route to a five-point win in the first set.  The Shorewomen used a 6-1 run to take an 8-3 lead on a kill by freshman outside hitter Caitlin Cooney (Gaithersburg, Md./Covenant Life School).  The Green Terror cut the lead to 17-16 on a service error by the Shorewomen before the  hosts scored eight of the last 12 points to take the first set on a kill by sophomore outside hitter Kristin Lee (Dayton, Md./River Hill).

The Green Terror jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the second set on an attack error by the Shorewomen.  A block by sophomore middle hitter Jess Daunoras (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) cut the McDaniel lead to 13-10, but McDaniel went on a 7-0 run to grab a 20-10 lead on a Colette Kellen service ace.  A kill by Emme Petti ended the set.

McDaniel led 10-9 in the third set before going on a 7-0 run to take a 17-9 lead on a Kloe Martin kill.  The Shorewomen would score the next five points to trim the lead to 17-14 on a McDaniel service error, but the Green Terror went on an 8-2 run to close out the set at 25-16 on a service ace by Genna Weger.

Washington took a 9-5 lead in the fourth set on a kill by junior middle hitter Sarah Beresik (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach).  However McDaniel would rally to take the lead for good at 13-12 on a Rose kill.  The kill by Rose ignited a 13-7 match closing run.  The Green Terror led 18-16 when Petti and Lexi Corral blocked an attack attempt by Washington to take a 19-16 lead and Washington would not get closer than three points the rest of the set.  An attack error by the Shorewomen ended the set and the match.

In addition to Rose, the Green Terror got double-doubles from Kellen (21 assists and 20 digs) and Martin (10 kills and 14 digs).  Kellen's 21 helpers led the guests.  Maddie Moyer totaled 16 assists, Caroline Savin had 11 kills and Genna Weger netted 11 digs for McDaniel.  Corral had a team-high four blocks and Martin served three aces to lead all players. 

Lee had a team-high 17 kills and 10 digs for her sixth straight double-double and 15th of the season.  Senior setter Lauren White (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) had a double-double too with a match-high 28 assists and 13 digs.  Cooney had 12 digs, while freshmen defensive specialist Audrey Utchen (San Ramon, Calif./Monte Vista) and freshman hitter Rachel Baker (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) had 19 and 15 digs respectively, with Utchen leading the team.  Daunoras had five blocks to lead all players.

The Shorewomen travel to Haverford on Thursday night for a 7:00 p.m. conference match.
