Volleyball Season Preview

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – In 2012, the Washington College volleyball team had its most successful Centennial Conference campaign in 18 years in winning four matches and downed Gettysburg for the first time since 1977.  With six players returning along with four newcomers joining the squad, the 2013 version of Shorewomen volleyball will seek to for the first time to reach the Centennial Conference Tournament under the guidance of first-year head coach Jamie Leventry, who was promoted from associate head coach in the spring.

The Shorewomen have plenty of depth at outside hitter with seven players at the position.  Leading the way at outside hitter is sophomore Kristin Lee (Dayton, Md./River Hill), who earned all-conference second team honors in 2012 as a freshman.  Lee led the team in kills (271), kills per set (3.08), points (309.5) and double-doubles (12).  She was second on the squad in digs (304).  Lee was sixth in the Centennial in kills per set and points per set along with seventh in kills.

The other returners on the outside are senior Emily Hoyle (Santa Rita, Guam/Guam) and junior Andi Folker (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County). Joining the returners on the outside attack are freshmen Rachel Baker (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West), Caitlin Cooney (Montgomery Village, Md./Covenant Life School) and Alexis Jordan (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Seminole Ridge).  Last season, Hoyle recorded 57 kills and Folker totaled 43 kills, but averaged 1.43 kills per set.  Hoyle and Jordan will be primarily right-side attackers.

At middle hitter, sophomore Jess Daunoras (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) returns for her sophomore season and had a solid first season for WC.  She was second on the team in blocks (76) and third on the team in kills (188) and points (240.5).  Daunoras was third in the Centennial last year in blocks per set (0.82) and fourth in blocks.  Joining Daunoras in the middle will be junior Sarah Beresik (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach).  Beresik was fourth on the team in kills with 81 in 2012.

The setter position is anchored by senior Lauren White (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown).  White had another strong campaign as a junior as she had a team-best 583 assists (7.77 assists per set) and also recorded 188 digs and 30 service aces.  She was second in aces and fourth in digs on the team. She netted seven double-doubles in 2012 and was fifth in the conference in assists per set.

The defensive specialist position will have just one player this fall and that will be freshman Audrey Utchen (San Ramon, Calif./Monte Vista)

On the sidelines, Leventry will be joined by second-year assistant coach Jen Potts, who was a member of Shorewomen Volleyball for four seasons from 2008-11.  The Shorewomen will begin the 2013 season against Rutgers-Camden at Gettysburg's Battlefield Classic at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 30th.  Later that day at 7:00 p.m., Washington will take on Stevenson at the classic.  The Shorewomen open their home and Centennial slate on September 11th versus Marymount at 7:00 p.m.

In addition to Rutgers-Camden, Stevenson and Marymount, the Shorewomen will play Penn State-Harrisburg, Bridgewater, Lancaster Bible, Delaware Valley, Immaculata, Rowan, Salisbury, Lebanon Valley, Kean, Frostburg State, Hollins, Hood, Catholic, Albright and Goucher in non-conference action.  .

In conference play the Shorewomen will compete at Johns Hopkins, Swarthmore, Muhlenberg, Franklin & Marshall and Haverford, while playing host to Bryn Mawr, Gettysburg, Dickinson, Ursinus and McDaniel.  WC will play eight home matches, eight away contests and 12 at neutral sites in 2013.
