Jenny Lee Totals 12 Kills, Five Aces and Four Blocks In Career Finale
CHESTERTOWN, MD – Four Washington College player tallied double figures in kills as the host Shorewomen topped visiting McDaniel, 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-21), on Saturday afternoon at the Cain Athletic Center in Centennial Conference volleyball action. Washington concludes the season at 12-15 overall and 4-6 in the Centennial Conference, while the Green Terror finish the year at 7-21 and 0-10 respectively. Washington has now beaten the Green Terror two times in a row for the first time in the series rivalry, which began in 1976. The four conference wins were the most since the squad went 5-5 in 1994.
In the first set, the set was tied 21-21 when the Green Terror won the next two points to take a 23-21 lead on a Kloe Martin kill. Washington cut it to 24-23 on a kill by senior middle hitter Jenny Lee (Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant), but Anne McShea ended the first set on a kill on her own to give McDaniel the opening set at 25-23.
McDaniel led 6-4 in the second set when Washington scored the next nine points to take a 13-6 lead on a kill by freshman middle hitter Jess Daunoras (Shamong, NJ/Seneca). McDaniel would rally to tie it 16-16 on a WC attack error, but the Shorewomen would win nine of the last 13 points to take the set. A service ace by freshman outside hitter Kristin Lee (Dayton, MD/River Hill) clinched the second set.
In the third set, the two teams were tied at 22-22 when Washington won three of the final four points to take a 2-1 lead. A Kristin Lee kill put WC up for good at 23-22 and Kristin Lee finished off the third set on a kill. Kristin Lee also figured into the 24th point for the Shorewomen on an assisted block with Jenny Lee.
The two teams in the four and final set were deadlocked at 20-20, but the hosts won five of the final six points to capture the set and match. A kill by sophomore outside hitter Andi Folker (Centreville, MD/Queen Anne's County) put the Shorewomen up for good at 21-20 and the Shorewomen won the match point on an attack error by McDaniel.
For the Shorewomen, Jenny Lee had 12 kills, a match-topping five service aces and tied for tops in the match with a team-best four blocks. Kristin Lee had her 12th double-double of the year with 12 kills and 14 digs. Daunoras had 13 kills, while Folker added 10 kills. Junior setter Lauren White had a match-high 44 assists and 11 digs. Also recording double figures in digs were sophomore libero Kate Liccione (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) with a team-best 21, senior defensive specialist Rita Rivera (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) had 13 digs and senior defensive specialist Kaitlin Rowan (Damascus, MD/Damascus) chipped in with 10 digs. WC hit .182 as a team in the win.
Colette Kellen passed out 38 assists and netted a match-high 23 digs for the Green Terror in the setback. Martin had 18 kills and 16 digs in recording a double-double. McShea added 17 kills and a team-high three aces, while Olivia Kunc had 19 digs and Melissa Weldon chipped in with 11 digs. Bryanna Smith had four blocks to tie for match-high. The Green Terror hit .175 as a team.
Today was the final match for head coach Lacey Lister, who will be stepping aside from her volleyball duties. In four years, she won 49 matches, including a 16-12 record in 2011. The 16-12 mark was the team's first winning season since 1993. Lister will continue to coach the softball team where she has won the conference's coach of the year award the past two seasons.
