Liccione With Match-High 17 Digs
HAVERFORD, PA – Host Haverford got a match-high 11 kills along with 11 digs from Keri Godbe as host Haverford downed visiting Washington College, 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-22) in Centennial Conference volleyball action on Wednesday evening at Gooding Arena. The Fords are now 19-8 overall and 6-2 in the conference, while the Shorewomen drop to 11-15 and 3-6 respectively.
The Fords took control of the first set by winning four straight points after the two teams split the first two points to take a 5-1 lead. After Washington cut the lead to 7-5 on a Haverford service error, Haverford captured the next four points to take an 11-5 lead on a WC attack error leading to a timeout by the visitors. The Shorewomen would get it within two points at 15-13 on a kill by freshman outside hitter Kristin Lee (Dayton, MD/River Hill), but the Fords countered with four unanswered points to take a 19-13 lead on a WC attack miscue. Haverford would clinch the set on a Nina Mutty kill.
Haverford snapped a 2-2 tie in the second set with a 7-0 run to take a 9-2 lead on a kill by Godbe. However, Washington responded with a 14-6 run of its own to take a 16-15 lead on an attack error by the Fords. The hosts though would counter with a 6-2 spurt to take a 21-18 lead on a Godbe kill. The Fords closed out the set by winning four of the last five points and took it 25-19. Olivia Coburn-Flynn tallied a kill to clinch the set for Haverford and completed a 10-3 closing set run.
In the third set, the hosts raced out to a 10-4 lead on a ball handling error by the guests. The Fords would eventually take a 16-8 lead on a service ace by Godbe, but the Shorewomen responded with a 6-3 run to trim the lead to 19-14 on a kill by senior Jenny Lee (Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant). The Fords captured four of the next five points to take a 23-15 lead on an attack miscue by WC, but Washington roared back with a 7-1 run to trim the Fords' lead to 24-22 on a Haverford attack error. However, Haverford sealed the set and the match on a Godbe kill to end it.
In addition to Godbe, Mutty and Meg O'Day each had 10 kills for the Fords, who hit .220 in the match. Mutty also had 10 digs to go with her 10 kills to give her a double-double. Olivia Walsh handed out a match-high 36 assists and added 10 digs to give Haverford three players with double-doubles in the match. Madison Fuelling had 12 digs to lead the Fords.
Sophomore libero Kate Liccione (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) had 17 digs to lead all players, while Kristin Lee added 12 digs. Junior setter Lauren White (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown) passed out 25 assists, including her 2000th career helper in the third set on a kill by Kristin Lee. She now has 2,010 kills in her career and the second WC player to reach this milestone, joining Caitlin Ward '10. Ward handed out 3,302 assists in her career. Jenny Lee had four blocks to lead all players.
The Shorewomen conclude their season on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. with a Centennial Conference volleyball match against visiting McDaniel.
