Rowan Season-Best 18 Digs; K. Lee 10 Kills and 10 Digs
SWARTHMORE, PA – Host Swarthmore lost the first set, but rallied to win the final three sets en route to a 3-1 (20-25, 25-9, 25-15, 25-15) victory over visiting Washington College in Centennial Conference volleyball action on Tuesday evening at Tarble Pavilion. The Garnet improve to 11-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while the Shorewomen are now 7-10 and 2-3 respectively.
In the first set, the Shorewomen scored six straight points to take a 7-2 lead on a kill by senior middle hitter Jenny Lee (Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant). The Garnet would respond with an 13-5 run of their own to reclaim the lead at 15-12 on a Kathryn Montemurro kill and led to a WC timeout. Undeterred, WC went on an 8-2 spurt to recapture the lead at 20-17 on a junior setter Lauren White (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown) kill. After Swarthmore trimmed the lead to 20-19 by getting the next two points, the Shorewomen took five of the final six points of the first set to win 25-20, clinching it on an attack error by the hosts. The set win ended a 21-set losing streak to Swarthmore and the first set win since taking the fifth set in 2004, 15-12.
Swarthmore used a 4-0 run to grab a 6-3 lead and would not trail the rest of the second set. The Garnet won three of the four points on service aces by Brone Lobichusky. Lobichusky's ace snapped a 3-3 tie to put Swarthmore up for good for the remainder of the set. The Garnet broke open an 8-6 score by scoring 17 of the final 20 points, including the final nine, to take a 25-9 set win. An attack miscue by the Shorewomen ended the second set.
Washington won the first point of the third set before the Garnet took the next six points to take a 6-1 lead on a Montemurro service ace, her third straight ace. The hosts led 9-6 before going on a 14-6 run to take a 23-12 lead on a Chastity Hopkins. Swarthmore secured the third set on a Montemurro kill at 25-15.
The two teams were tied 2-2 in the fourth set before Swarthmore went on an 8-0 run to grab a 10-2 lead on an assisted block by Hopkins and Zahra Ahmed. The Garnet would eventually lead by as many as 13 points in the final set. A dual block by Hopkins and Allison Coleman clinched the set and the match for the Garnet.
Montemurro led the Swarthmore attack with match-highs of 11 kills and 25 digs and added four aces. Madison Heppe had 16 digs and Sullivan chipped in with 13 digs. Coleman recorded a double-double with 17 assists and added 12 digs to give the hosts four players with double figures in digs on the night. Samantha DuBois notched 13 assists for the Garnet. Lobichusky served up seven aces to lead all players and added four blocks. Hopkins led all participants with five blocks.
Freshman outside hitter Kristin Lee (Dayton, MD/River Hill) had 10 kills and 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. Senior defensive specialist Kaitlin Rowan (Damascus, MD/Damascus) had a season-best 18 digs to lead the Shorewomen, while sophomore libero Kate Liccione (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) chalked up 16 digs. White handed out 22 assists to lead all players, while freshman outside hitter Jess Daunoras (Shamong, NJ/Seneca) had a team-topping four blocks.
The Shorewomen return to action on Saturday afternoon in a tri-match against conference rival Muhlenberg and non-conference opponent Cedar Crest at Muhlenberg. WC plays Muhlenberg at noon and Cedar Crest at 2:00 p.m.
