Washington College Swept by DeSales, Elizabethtown
ALLENTOWN, PA -- The Washington College volleyball team dropped its first two matches at Muhlenberg Colleg's Buttermaker Tournament tonight. The Shorewomen (2-5) lost their first match of the tournament, 25-14, 25-23, 25-22, to DeSales and then fell to Elizabethtown, 25-15, 25-17, 25-20.
In the Shorewomen's first match of the tournament, DeSales cruised to a 25-14 win in the first set before rallying from a 23-14 deficit with 11 straight points to take the second set. The Bulldogs finished off the Shorewomen in the third set with an 8-2 run to post a 25-22 win and sweep the match.
Paige Horrigan led DeSales with nine kills, while Eden Reichard had eight kills and 16 digs. Brooke Horrigan tallied 27 assists and 12 digs for the Bulldogs and Amanda Wallitsch recorded 17 digs. For Washington, freshman middle hitter Jess Daunoras (Shamong, NJ/Seneca) had a career-best seven kills to go along with three blocks in the loss. Junior setter Lauren White (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown) had a double-double with 25 assists and 18 digs, while sophomore defensive specialist Kate Liccione (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) had a match-best 19 digs. Freshman outside hitter Kristin Lee (Dayton, MD/River Hill) and senior middle hitter Jenny Lee (Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant) finished with eight and seven kills, respectively.
In Washington's second match of the night, Elizabethtown jumped out to a 16-3 lead in the first set en route to a 25-15 set win. The Blue Jays then took the second set, 25-17, and closed out the match with a 25-20 win in set three.
Sixteen different Blue Jays played in the match. Lindsay Palm had seven kills for Elizabethtown, while Mary Clyne had 22 assists and seven digs. Shannon Deck had a match-best 13 digs for the Blue Jays. Liccione had eight digs in the loss for the Shorewomen, while Jenny Lee tallied five kills and six digs and Daunoras finished with a match-best four blocks.
The Shorewomen will play against Neumann at 12:00 p.m. and Centenary (NJ) at 2:00 tomorrow on the final day of the Buttermaker Tournament.
