Bell With A Pair of Double-Doubles In Wins
FREDERICK, MD – Washington College took both matches against host Hood and Bryn Athyn at Gambrill Gym on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference volleyball tri-match hosted by Hood College. The Shorewomen downed Bryn Athyn, 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-10), in the first match and host Hood, 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-11) in the second match of the day. Washington is now 14-9 on the season.
Against Bryn Athyn (5-9) in the first match, the Shorewomen served seven aces in the first set en route to a 25-16 victory. WC took control of the set by scoring six straight points to turn a 3-2 deficit into an 8-3 lead. Three of the six points won during the spurt were on service aces by freshman outside hitter Lauren Bell (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh). In set two, Washington raced out to a 13-4 lead against the Lions and never looked back and a kill by junior middle hitter Jenny Lee (Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant) sealed the second set. In the third and last set, WC never trailed en route to a 25-10 win. The team served seven aces and the match concluded on a ball handling error by Bryn Athyn.
The Shorewomen served up 21 aces against the Lions, with junior defensive specialist Rita Rivera (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) leading the way with six aces. Bell had a double-double with match-highs of 12 kills and 12 digs along with four aces. She also hit .478 in the victory. Sophomore setter Lauren White (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown) handed out 28 assists to lead all players. As a team, WC hit .295 in the match.
For Bryn Athyn, Cree Gurney and Cathleen Curren had 10 digs each to lead the Lions. Kaitlyn Brock had a team-topping nine kills, while Brooke Blair passed out seven assists to lead the team.
In the second match for WC against host Hood (8-11), the Shorewomen scored nine of the last 10 points to turn a 16-12 lead into a 25-13 first set win. A kill by Bell ended the opening set. In the second set, Washington jumped out to a 19-6 lead en route to a 25-14 victory. A service ace by senior defensive specialist Jen Potts (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) concluded the second set. In the third and final set, the Shorewomen never trailed en route to a 25-11 triumph to clinch the match. An attack error by the Blazers ended the set and the match.
Bell recorded her second double-double of the day with a match-high 18 kills and 10 digs to lead the way for WC. Freshman defensive specialist Kate Liccione (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) led the Shorewomen with 15 digs, while Rivera added 13. Lee had 10 kills to join Bell in double-digits in kill. Rivera had seven aces to lead all players and WC had 17 as a team and the squad also hit .277. White handed out 30 assists for the guests.
For Hood, Theresa Schwarzwalder had 17 digs to lead all players. Brittany Lethbridge added 11 digs for the Blazers, while Amy Hagerdon led the hosts with 10 assists.
Washington returns to action on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. when they play at Ursinus in Centennial Conference volleyball action.
