White Tallies Fifth Double-Double of Season
CHESTERTOWN, MD – Visiting Muhlenberg College got a match-high 18 kills from Holly Hynson as the Mules rallied to best host Washington College, 3-1 (24-26, 25-16, 25-17, 25-21), on Friday afternoon at the Cain Athletic Center in Centennial Conference volleyball action. The Mules improve to 6-12 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while the Shorewomen drop to 9-9 and 0-5 respectively.
In the first set, Muhlenberg jumped out to a 6-1 lead, but Washington would go on a 15-9 run to take a 16-15 lead on a kill by sophomore setter Lauren White (Huntingtown, MD/Huntingtown). With the score tied 23-23, the Shorewomen scored three of the final four points to take the set. An attack error by Muhlenberg clinched the set for Washington. In the first set, there were 13 ties.
Muhlenberg won the first three points of the second set and never trailed in the set en route to a 25-16 victory. The Mules blew open the set with a 7-0 run to extend their lead from 10-8 to 17-8 on a kill by Hynson. A Hynson kill ended the second set and leveled the match at one set apiece.
The hosts jumped out to a 12-9 lead in the third set following a kill by freshman outside hitter Lauren Bell (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh). Muhlenberg however would score the next eight points to take control of the third and grab a 17-12 lead on a Hynson kill. The Shorewomen would only get as close as four points in the rest of the set as Hynson ended the set with a kill.
In the fourth set, Muhlenberg raced out to a 12-6 lead on kill by Nikki Dickson. WC would rally with a 10-5 run to cut the Mules' lead to 17-16 on a Bell kill. However, the Mules would win the next point on a kill by Laurainne Ojo-Ohikuare and that would ignite a match-closing 8-5 run. Jackie Price finished off the match with a kill.
Hynson hit .696 in the match to lead all players and the Mules hit .311 overall as a team. Price added 12 kills for the visitors. Morgan Duggan handed out a team-high 25 assists and added three service aces to lead the guests, while Dickson passed out 22 helpers. Alyssa Schnell had 19 digs to lead all players.
Bell had 13 kills to lead the Shorewomen, while junior middle hitter Jenny Lee (Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant) added 12 kills and hit a team-high .579, while serving up a match-high four aces. White had her fifth double-double of the season with 35 assists and a team-best 15 digs. Junior defensive specialist Rita Rivera (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) netted 10 digs.
The Shorewomen return to action on Wednesday with a home tri-match against visiting Wesley and Goucher. WC hosts Wesley at 4:00 p.m. and Goucher at 8:00 p.m. Goucher and Wesley will play the middle match at 6:00 p.m.
