Lee Paces Shorewomen with 16 Kills
BRYN MAWR, PA -- Host Bryn Mawr College defeated visiting Washington College, 25-16, 30-28, 23-25, 25-21, in a Centennial Conference volleyball match tonight in Bryn Mawr, PA. The Owls improved to 5-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 7-4 and 0-2 with the loss.
The Owls scored 11 of the final 15 points of the first set to pull away for the set victory. In the second set, Bryn Mawr held a 24-20 lead before the Shorewomen ran off five straight points to take a 25-24 lead. The Owls won the set on back-to-back kills by Mikecia Witherspoon. Washington held a 24-21 lead in the third set before Bryn Mawr scored two points to pull within one. Junior middle hitter Jenny Lee (Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant) ended the set with a kill to keep the Shorewomen in the match and force a fourth set. The Owls scored four of the final five points in the fourth set to take the match on a kill by Katie Merrill.
Merrill turned in a triple-double performance for the Owls, registering 16 kills, a team-high 18 digs, and a match-best 10 blocks (four solo, six assisted). Witherspoon had a match-high 19 kills and 14 digs for Bryn Mawr, while Danielle Preziuso had 25 assists and 13 digs. Hannah Rosebrock added nine kills and 12 digs for the Owls.
Lee paced the Shorewomen with 16 kills and five blocks (three solo, two assisted), while freshman defensive specialist Kate Liccione (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) scooped out a career-high and match-best 24 digs. Freshman outside hitter Lauren Bell (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) added 12 kills, while sophomore setter Lauren White (Huntingtown, MDHuntingtown) tallied 36 assists and 14 digs.
The Shorewomen will host the Penny Fall Classic Saturday, taking on Marymount at 12:00 p.m. and College of Southern Maryland, a junior college, in an exhibition match at 4:00 p.m.
