Shorewomen Outscore Green Terror, 24-0, in Doubles
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Washington College women's tennis team completed its regular season this afternoon by rolling to a 9-0 Centennial Conference win over visiting McDaniel at Schottland Tennis Center. The Shorewomen, ranked 10th in the region, improved to 14-2 overall and 9-1 in conference play with the win, while the Green Terror slid to 4-11 and 1-8 with the loss.
The Shorewomen won all three doubles matches without losing a single game. Juniors Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) downed Maddy Simmons and Tori Simmons, 8-0, at No. 1, while freshmen Krista Filiopoulos (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Julie Lazer (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) defeated Leesa Malcewski and Winsome Schauer, 8-0 at No. 2. At No. 3, junior Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) and freshman Rachel Martinez (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) defeated Nicole Arnold and Dana Waskiewicz, 8-0.
In singles, Filiopoulos finished first with a 6-0, 6-0, win against Danielle Cloney at No. 4. Kang then clinched the match when she completed a 6-1, 6-2, victory against Waskiewicz at No. 5. Lazer followed with her 6-1, 6-1, win against Tori Simmons at No. 2 and Martinez improved to 15-0 this spring with her 6-0, 6-1, victory over Schauer at No. 3. Weaver, ranked 16th in the region in singles, bested Maddy Simmons, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1. Senior Emily Evans (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) finished off the shutout with her 3-6, 6-1, 10-5, win against Arnold at No. 6.
The Shorewomen return to action next Saturday with a Centennial Conference semifinal match against an opponent to be determined. The most likely scenario involves the Shorewomen hosting that match and playing Franklin & Marshall.
