Martinez Improves to 11-0 at No. 4 Singles
HAVERFORD, Pa. -- The Washington College women's tennis team, ranked 10th in the Atlantic South region, improved to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in Centennial Conference play with a 6-3 win over host Haverford College, the region's 12th-ranked team, this afternoon in Haverford, Pa. The Fords fell to 12-4 and 5-3 with the loss.
Juniors Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) posted an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles for the Shorewomen over Caitlin Gallagher and Robyn Himelstein. Washington also won at No. 3 doubles as junior Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) and freshman Rachel Martinez (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) topped Abby Payson and Kristen Andersen, 8-2. Haverford won at No. 2 where Greta Koch and Jessica Liu bested freshmen Krista Filiopoulos (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Julie Lazer (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School), 8-5.
In singles, Weaver, the region's 16th-ranked player, was a 6-4, 6-4, winner against Gallagher at No. 1. The Fords took the No. 2 and No. 3 singles as Koch beat McIntyre, 7-6(2), 6-2, at No. 2 and Himelstein bested Lazer, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3. The Shorewomen won at the bottom three spots. Martinez outlasted Payson, 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 at No. 4 to improve to 11-0 this spring. Filiopoulos got the better of Liu, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5, and Kang downed Andersen, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6.
The Shorewomen return to action Friday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Muhlenberg, the region's 18th-ranked team.
