Pant Records First Collegiate Win

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Washington College women's tennis team remains undefeated this spring courtesy of a 5-1 non-conference win over visiting St. Mary's (Md.) College in a match played to decision inside the Johnson Fitness Center this afternoon. The Shorewomen are now 9-0 on the season, their second-best start to a season ever, trailing only the 2011 team which won its first 11 matches.

The Shorewomen completed all three doubles wins within five minutes of each other. Juniors Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) defeated Shannon Ramsey and Emily Stumpfig, 8-1, at No. 1. At No. 2, freshmen Krista Filiopoulos (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Julie Lazer (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) blanked Melissa Barall and Emily Rost, 8-0. Junior Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) and freshman Rachel Martinez (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) downed Lauren Rost and Chelsea English, 8-1, at No. 3.

Freshman Kiran Pant (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) pushed the Shorewomen's lead to 4-0 by picking up her first collegiate win, defeating Katie Chase, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6 singles. The Seahawks (9-3) got on the board courtesy of Barall's 6-0, 6-2, win against McIntyre at No. 2, but Weaver finished the match with a 6-2, 6-3, defeat of Ramsey at No. 1.

The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with an 11:00 a.m. non-conference match at Salisbury.
