Shorewomen Improve to 7-0 on Season
LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Washington College women's tennis team knocked off Franklin & Marshall, the 15th-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, 6-3, in a Centennial Conference women's tennis match this afternoon in Lancaster, Pa. The Shorewomen remain undefeated at 7-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play with the win, while the Diplomats slipped to 5-2 and 1-1 with the loss.
Juniors Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg), the region's 14th-ranked doubles tandem, easily dispatched Caitlin Rummelsburg and Sara Haas, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles for the Shoremen. Freshmen Krista Filiopoulos (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Julie Lazer (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) added an 8-4 win against Nicole Russo and Dana Sleeper at No. 2. F&M won at No. 3 as Tara Buchney and Emily Gruenberg beat junior Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) and freshman Rachel Martinez (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula), 8-5.
In singles, Weaver bested Russo, ranked 20th in the region in singles, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1. Lazer added a 7-6(2), 6-2, win against Haas at No. 3, Martinez topped Buchney, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 4, and Filiopoulos defeated, Megan FitzMaurice, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5. F&M won at No. 2, where Rummelsburg rallied for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, win against McIntyre and at No. 6, where Gruenberg got the better of Kang, 6-4, 6-1.
The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Swarthmore.
