Still Perfect: Shorewomen Cage Bears, 7-2

Filiopoulos Clinches Win with Victory at No. 6 Singles

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Washington College women's tennis team improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in Centennial Conference play by handing visiting Ursinus just its second loss of the season, 7-2, this afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center.

Freshmen Krista Filiopoulos (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Julie Lazer (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) put the Shorewomen on the board first with an 8-2 win over Audrey Whitebloom and Ariel Danzinger at No. 2 doubles. Ursinus (8-2, 0-1 Centennial) picked up its first point of the match at No. 3 doubles as BreAnna Bashaw and Christina Cromwell bested junior Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) and freshman Rachel Martinez (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula), 8-1.  The Shorewomen regained the lead when juniors Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) finished an 8-1 victory over Ashley Nguyen and Aileen Bevard at No. 1. 

Lazer beat Bashaw in the first singles match to finish, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3. Weaver followed with a 6-3, 6-0, win against Nguyen at No. 1. Filiopoulos clinched the match with her 6-1, 6-1, win against Danzinger at No. 6. The Bears got their second point at No. 5 singles where Bevard defeated Kang, 6-4, 3-6, 10-7. Martinez then completed a 6-2, 6-3, win against Cromwell at No. 4 and McIntyre rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 10-4, triumph over Whitebloom at No. 2.

The Shorewomen return to action Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Franklin & Marshall.
