Shorewomen Remain Unbeaten at 4-0 Overall
CARLISLE, Pa. -- The Washington College women's tennis team defeated host Dickinson College, 8-1, in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams this afternoon in Carlisle, Pa. The Shorewomen remained unbeaten at 4-0 overall this spring, while the Red Devils fell to 1-3 with the loss.
Washington swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead in the match. Juniors Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) defeated Joana Nunes and Madison Parks, 9-7, at No. 1. Freshmen Krista Filiopoulos (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Julie Lazer (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) topped Stuart Lemy and Sarah Cantor, 8-1, at No. 2. At No. 3, freshman Rachel Martinez (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) and junior Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) were 8-2 winners over Elizabeth Marin and Emily Sprague.
Filiopoulos posted the Shorewomen's most dominant singles win, blanking Marin, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6. Martinez cruised past Cantor at No. 4, 6-2, 6-2. Both Weaver and Kang survived close first sets to easily win their second as Weaver beat Nunes, 7-6(6), 6-2, at No. 1 and Kang bested Sprague, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 5. McIntyre rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 10-6, win against Parks at No. 2. Dickinson's win came at No. 3 where Lemay edged out Lazer, 4-6, 6-4, 11-9.
The Shorewomen are back in action tomorrow with an 11:00 a.m. non-conference match at York.
