Shorewomen Improve to 3-0
TAMPA, Fla. -- The Washington College women's tennis team won two of three doubles spots and five of six in singles en route to a 7-2 victory over the University of Northwestern (Minn.) this afternoon in Tampa, Fla. The Shorewomen improved to 3-0 with the win, while the Eagles fell to 6-4 with the loss.
Juniors Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) pulled out a 9-8(4) win at No. 1 doubles for the Shorewomen, while freshmen Krista Filiopoulos (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Julie Lazer (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) defeated Rachel Bostrom and Brooke Lapinski, 8-3, at No. 2. At No. 3 doubles, Bridie Bardwell and Tina Matetich picked up a win for the Eagles, beating freshman Rachel Martinez (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) and junior Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn]), 9-8(8).
In singles, Weaver rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 11-9, win at No. 1. Northwestern got its second point at No. 2 as Moe bested McIntyre, 6-2, 6-2. Lazer downed Bardwell, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3, while Martinez topped Bostrom, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4. Kang added a 6-1, 6-2, win over Lapinski at No. 5, while Filiopoulos blanked Matetich, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6.
The Shorewomen return to action March 21st with their Centennial Conference opener, a 1:00 p.m. match at Dickinson.
