Martinez, Filiopolous Blank Singles Opponents
TAMPA, Fla. -- The Washington College women's tennis team upped its record to 2-0 this season with an 8-1 win over Division II Daemen College in a match played at the University of South Florida in Tampa today. The Wildcats, who played the bulk of their dual-match schedule in the fall, dropped to 8-14 with the loss.
The Shorewomen lost a total of just four games in doubles. Juniors Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) were 8-1 winners against Karli Hollins and Hayle Scanlan at No. 1, freshmen Krista Filiopoulos (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Julie Lazer (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) defeated Gretchen Ringler and Tianna Washington, 8-2, at No. 2, and freshman Rachel Martinez (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) and Blair Kang (Gangnam, South Korea/Westhill [Conn.]) beat Sarah Crissy and Aman Shamaa, 8-1, at No. 3.
In the Shorewomen's five singles wins they lost just five games. Weaver beat Hollins, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1, Lazer beat Ringler, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3, and Martinez blanked Shamaa, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4. Kang swept Crissy, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5, while Filiopoulos shut out Washington, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6. The Wildcats' lone point came at No. 2 singles as Scanlan beat McIntyre, 6-4, 0-6, 10-7.
The Shorewomen will play Northwestern (Minn.) tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. in Tampa.
