Weaver Makes Singles Third Round, Doubles Quarterfinals with McIntyre at ITAs

Filiopoulos Advances to Blue 4 Singles Final

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Junior April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) advanced to the third round of Championship Singles and, along with junior Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom), advanced to the quarterfinals of Championship Doubles at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships at the University of Mary Washington this weekend. In addition, freshman Krista Filiopoulos (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School) advanced to the final of Blue 4 Singles. 

In the first round of Championship Singles, Weaver, who was seeded fifth, cruised past Washington and Lee's Kelsey Vella, 6-0, 6-2. She bested Christopher Newport's Logan Eldridge, 6-3, 6-0, in the second round to move into the final 16. There, she lost to Jody Law of Johns Hopkins, 6-2, 6-2.

Weaver and McIntyre were one of four fifth-seeded tandems in Championship Doubles. The duo opened play with an 8-2 win over Swarthmore's Maria Cuervo and Anna Scheibmeir. In the second round, they won by the same score against Mary Washington's Chrissy Gaul and Paige Weinberg. In the quarterfinals, Weaver and McIntyre faced fourth-seeded Megumi Chen and Sydney Lehman of Johns Hopkins and lost by an 8-5 score.  

In Blue 4 Singles, Filiopoulos beat Shenandoah's Shannon Allin, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round and bested Lauren Rost of St. Mary's in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-0. In the semifinals, she bested Franklin & Marshall's Ally Breece, 6-1, 6-2, setting up a showdown with Mary Washington's Kait Brogan in the final. Brogan came out on top in that match, 6-2, 6-2. 

Elsewhere in singles, McIntyre competed in Blue 1 Singles. In the first round, she beat Elizabethtown's Sarah Calabro, 6-4, 6-1. In a quarterfinal match, she fell to Savannah DeMontesquio of Johns Hopkins, 6-3, 6-1. 

Freshman Julie Lazer (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) opened Blue 2 Singles with a 6-1, 6-1, victory over Franklin & Marshall's Megan Fitzmaurice. In the quarterfinals, she defeated Muhlenberg's Sharon Resnikoff, 7-6(0), 6-0. She was then eliminated by Mikey Barthelmass of Johns Hopkins in the semifinals, 7-5, 6-2. 

Freshman Rachel Martinez (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes) began Blue 3 Singles with a 6-2, 6-0, win against Penn State-Harrisburg's Jessica Miller before losing to Melissa Barall of St. Mary's in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 7-5. 

Freshman Kiran Pant (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) received a first-round bye in Blue 5 Singles. In the quarterfinals, she fell to Linnea Peters of Grove City, 6-1, 6-3. 

Sophomore Megan Obarowski (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) competed in Blue 6 Singles, where she lost, 6-2, 3-6, 10-5, in the first round against Salisbury's Sage Cole. She was scheduled to play a a consolation quarterfinal match against Penn State-Harrisburg's Stephanie Hamden, but Hamden was injured and unable to play. Obarowski advanced to the consolation semifinal against Franklin & Marshall's Sydney Fas. Fas won that match, 8-1.

In Blue 7 Singles, freshman Allie Boissonneault (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 10-5, win over Suri Xia of Sweet Briar in the first round. In the quarterfinals, she lost to Moravian's Caitlin Adams, 6-0, 6-0.

Elsewhere in doubles, Martinez and Filiopoulos began Blue 1 Doubles play by cruising to an 8-1 victory against Bridgewater's Whitney Cash and Ashley Price. In the quarterfinals, they then lost to the F&M team of Fitzmaurice and Dana Sleeper, 8-4. 

In Blue 2 Doubles, Lazer and Pant lost to Catholic's Eliana Martinez and Laura Torsiello, 9-8(7), in the first round. In the consolation quarterfinals, they lost to Swarthmore's Abby Schmidt and Sophia Schuster, 8-6. 

Junior Monica Benitez (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) team with Boissonneault to compete in Blue 3 Doubles. They opened with an 8-0 loss against Bridgewater's Shannon Quinn and Leanne Smithers before falling, 8-1, in a consolation quarterfinal match against the St. Mary's team of Chelsea English and Anna Passaniti
