Weaver, McIntyre Win in Singles & Doubles
ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- Host Muhlenberg College, ranked 20th in the Atlantic South region, posted a 6-3 Centennial Conference women's tennis victory over visiting Washington College this afternoon in Allentown, Pa.
Muhlenberg (4-4, 3-2 Centennial) took a 2-1 lead by winning at the bottom two doubles spots. Sophomore April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and sophomore Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) picked up an 8-3 win at No. 1 for Washington (3-6, 0-5) over Nina Sanders and Emily Szulman, but Sara Finger and Sharen Resnikoff beat senior Amy Stevens (Street, Md./North Harford) and junior Emily Evans (West Chester, Pa./Henderson), 8-0, at No. 2, and Jennifer Goldberg and Gabriela Contino bested sophomore Monica Benitez (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) and freshman Tricia Valerio (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South), 8-1, at No. 3.
The Mules rolled to wins at the bottom four singles spots. Szulman beat Evans, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3, Goldberg downed Stevens, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4, Resnikoff topped Valerio, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5, and Jamie Rosenblum blanked Benitez, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6. Weaver picked up a point for Washington at No. 1 as she led Finger, 5-0, in the first set before Finger retired. McIntyre scored the Shorewomen's third point with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-5, victory against Sanders at No. 2.
The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Bryn Mawr.
