Weaver, McIntyre Pick Up Singles Wins in Loss
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Host Swarthmore College, ranked 10th in the Atlantic South region, defeated visiting Washington College, 7-2, in a Centennial Conference women's tennis match this afternoon in Swarthmore, Pa.
The Garnet (3-6, 2-0 Centennial) swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead in the match. Swarthmore posted a pair of 8-0 wins at the bottom two spots as Katie Samuelson and Brooke Wilkins beat junior Emily Evans (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and senior Amy Stevens (Street, Md./North Harford) at No. 2 and Gayatri Iyengar and Jackie Lane bested sophomore Monica Benitez (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) and freshman Tricia Valerio (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) at No. 3. At No. 1, Lia Carlson and Alli Wong pulled out a 9-8 victory over sophomore April Weaver (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and sophomore Marielle McIntyre (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom).
Weaver and McIntyre exacted a measure of revenge against Carlson and Wong in singles play. Weaver, ranked 17th in the region in singles, rolled past Carlson, ranked 11th, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1, while McIntyre outlasted Wong for a 6-2, 4-6, 11-9, win at No. 2. Swarthmore posted straight-set wins at the other four singles spots, however, as Iyengar downed Evans, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3, Wilkins defeated Stevens, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4, Lane beat Valerio, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5, and Epiphany English topped Benitez, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6.
The Shorewomen (3-5, 0-4) return to action Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Muhlenberg.
