Washington Takes Five of Six Singles Matches in Win
CARLISLE, PA -- The Washington College women's tennis team improved to 5-0 overall with a 6-3 win over host Dickinson College in the Centennial Conference opener for both schools this afternoon in Carlisle, PA. Washington entered the match ranked 14th in the Atlantic South region, while Dickinson was ranked 13th.
The Shorewomen trailed, 2-1, after doubles play despite juniors Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep [MD]), the region's seventh-ranked doubles team, blanking Alysia Rodger and Shannon Lavery, 9-0, at No. 1. Dickinson (2-4 overall) picked up 8-6 wins at No. 2, where Joelle Nitzberg and Carla Cox beat freshman Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, NJ/Bergen Tech) and sophomore Campbell McNicol (Mill Neck, NY/St. George's School), and at No. 3, where Sarah Woodward and Leigh Oczkowski bested sophomore Kat Cohen (Springfield, MA/Williston-Northampton School) and freshman Bethany Daller (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan).
The Shorewomen were dominant in the top half of the singles line-up as Finnegan downed Rodgers, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1, Bercovici beat Nitzburg, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 2, and Marshall (ranked 15th in the region in singles) blanked Lavery, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3. Dickinson picked up its third point of the match at No. 4 where Woodward was a 6-4, 6-2, winner over McNicol. Cohen defeated Oczkowski, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 5 and Daller beat Maddy Altholtz, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 6 to round out singles.
The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with their Centennial Conference opener, a 3:30 p.m. home match against Ursinus.
