Portmann Wins Award in Worldwide GIS Contest

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Washington College sophomore swimmer Julia Portmann (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd) recently won second place in the "ocean" category of a worldwide Geographic Information Systems (GIS) contest. Esri, makers of the mapping software ArcGIS, sponsored the contest, dubbed the "Global Content Challenge."

Esri's challenge was open to graduate and undergraduate students all over the world and asked participants to use Esri content to produce "their own geographic analyses, visualizations, predictive models and more to tell a compelling scientific story."

Portmann's project, "Attack of the Blobs," focuses on anomalous patches of unusually warm water that have begun appearing in the Pacific Ocean.
