Women's Swimming Season Preview

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Thanks to one of the program's largest freshman classes in recent memory, the Washington College women's swim team will feature a young roster in 2014-15. With nine freshmen and five sophomores on a 20-woman roster, this year's Shorewomen will need significant contributions from its less experienced swimmers in order to improve upon last year's seventh-place finish at the Centennial Conference Championships.

A trio of senior captains will provide leadership to the young team this winter. Emily Goodchild (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) was the Shorewomen's representative on the 2013 Centennial Conference All-Sportsmanship Team and contributes in a variety of events. Alicia Howard (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) ranks as the third-fastest swimmer in team history in the 100 backstroke and ninth-fastest in the 200 backstroke and 50 freestyle. Ashley Maurizi (Reamstown, Pa./Cocalico) has twice scored points in the 1650 freestyle at conference championship meets.

Julianna Fritzinger (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area), Kelsey McGrellis (Hockessin, Del./A.I. DuPont), and Cate McMenamin (Souderton, Pa./Souderton Area) comprise the Shorewomen's junior class. Fritzinger was named the Shorewomen's Most Improved Swimmer last season after scoring points in three individual events at the conference championships. She is the Shorewomen's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in the 400 individual medley and eighth-fastest in the 200 breaststroke. McGrellis and McMenamin are both among the team's top backstrokers.

Ellen Maxwell (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) is coming off an impressive freshman season as she scored points in a pair of individual events at the Centennial Conference Championships and already ranks fourth all-time in school history in the 400 individual medley, sixth in the 1650 freestyle, eighth in the 200 individual medley, and ninth in the 1000 freestyle. Fellow sophomores Megan Obarowski (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) and Angelina Tomasura (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) also made their marks on the Shorewomen's record books as freshmen. Obarowski is the Shorewomen's eighth-fastest swimmer ever in the 400 individual medley and ninth-fastest ever in the 200 butterfly and scored points in both of those events at last year's championships. Tomasura is the Shorewomen's ninth-fastest swimmer ever in the 100 butterfly and finished 14th in that event at last year's conference championships. Jackie Creitz (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland), who placed 15th in the 100 backstroke at last year's conference championships, and Madeleine Morrissette (Arlington, Mass./Arlington), who was named to the 2014 Centennial Conference All-Sportsmanship Team and contributes in freestyle events, complete the sophomore class.

The Shorewomen's freshman class consists of Maija Adourian (Phoenix, Md./Notre Dame Prep), Jennifer Clune (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt), Emelie Farrington (Neptune, N.J./Monmouth County Academy), Mackenzie Gaze (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), Katie Gorman (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park), Allie Grillo (Mt. Airy, Md./The Learning Community), Tricia Liller (Alexandria, Va./Annandale), Ali Sanders (Dover, Del./Milford), and Joelle Williamson (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor)

Also new to the Shorewomen this season is first-year assistant coach Warren Dolben, a former conference champion in the 100 breaststroke at Alfred University who most recently served as an assistant coach at King's (Pa.) College. Dolben joins head coach Kim Lessard, now in her 25th season at the helm of the Shorewomen, and Matt Harris, who was promoted to Senior Assistant Coach over the summer. Lessard also coaches the men's team and was named the Centennial Conference Men's Swimming Coach of the Year last winter. She has a combined dual-meet record of 328-196-1 between the two programs.

The Shorewomen will open their 2014-15 schedule with a dual meet at conference rival Franklin & Marshall November 1st. Their home opener is slated for November 8th as they host Gettysburg. The 2015 Centennial Conference Championships will be hosted by Gettysburg February 20th-22nd.
