CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- After improving its Centennial Conference Championship point total by 22 from 2012 to 2013, the Washington College women's swimming team is poised for another improvement this season.
The Shorewomen return 10 swimmers from last year's team and will be led by senior co-captains Ellie Miskiel (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) and Carly Ogren (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock). Miskiel is the team's two-time reigning Most Valuable Swimmer and the defending Centennial Conference Champion in the 200 breaststroke. She also won bronze in the 100 breaststroke at last year's conference championship meet. She is the Shorewomen's second-fastest swimmer ever in the 200 breaststroke, third-fastest in the 100 breaststroke, seventh-fastest in the 50 freestyle, and eighth-fastest in the 100 freestyle.
Ogren is the Shorewomen's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in the 100 freestyle and eighth-fastest swimmer ever in the 200 freestyle, finishing 12th and 14th in those two events, respectively, at last year's Centennial Conference Championships. She has also been a part of two school-record relay teams.
Laura Prengaman (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) completes the Shorewomen's three-member senior class and will again provide the team with depth in freestyle and breaststroke events.
Alicia Howard (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) is one of four juniors on the roster. The third-fastest swimmer in team history in the 100 backstroke and ninth-fastest ever in the 200 backstroke, she was named the Shorewomen's Most Improved Swimmer last season. She finished sixth in the 100 backstroke and seventh in the 200 backstroke at last year's Centennial Conference Championships. Classmate Emily Goodchild (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) is a versatile swimmer who has contributed in backstroke, freestyle, butterfly, and medley events, while Clair Belleveau (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow) also contributes in freestyle events. After completing a study abroad semester this fall, Ashley Maurizi (Reamstown, Pa./Cocalico) will rejoin the team in January. She placed 11th in the 1650 freestyle at last year's Centennial Conference Championships.
Julianna Fritzinger (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area) was the Shorewomen's top placing freshman at the conference championships a year ago and is one of three returning sophomores. She is the Shorewomen's eighth fastest swimmer ever in the 400 individual medley and ninth-fastest ever in the 200 breaststroke. She placed in both breaststroke events and finished eighth in the 400 individual medley at last year's Centennial Conference Championships. Classmates Kelsey McGrellis (Hockessin, Del./A.I. DuPont) and Cate McMenamin (Souderton, Pa./Souderton Area) were both among the team's top backstrokers a year ago.
Five freshmen are also on this year's roster - Jacquelyn Creitz (Schencksville, Pa./Parkland), Ellen Maxwell (Towson, Md./Loch Raven), Madeleine Morrissette (Arlington, Mass./Arlington), Megan Obarowski (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South), and Angelina Tomasura (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South).
Head coach Kim Lessard returns for her 24th year guiding the Shorewomen, while assistant coaches Jillian Hancock and Matt Harris also return. The Shorewomen will open their 2013-14 dual meet season with a Centennial Conference meet at Gettysburg November 2nd. Their home opener will be four days later against Eastern Shore rival Salisbury. The 2014 Centennial Conference Championships will be hosted by Franklin & Marshall February 21st-23rd.
