Women's Swimming Season Preview (with Video)

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's swim team welcomes back 11 of last year's swimmers as the Shorewomen get set to open their 2012-13 season.

Leading the way for the Shorewomen will be team co-captains Sarah Sykes (Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley Demarest) and Ellie Miskiel (Gaithersburg, MD/Quince Orchard). Sykes, one of only two seniors on the team, is among the top five fastest swimmers in team history in five different events.  She was named the team's Most Improved Swimmer last season after scoring points in the 200 butterfly, 400 individual medley, and 500 freestyle at the 2012 Centennial Conference Championships.  Miskiel was named the team's MVP a year ago after finishing fourth in both breaststroke events and 13th in the 200 individual medley at the Centennial Championships.  She is third all-time at the school in the 200 breaststroke and ranks in the top 10 in three other individual events.

Allison Kvien (Mechanicsville, MD/Chopticon) joins Sykes as the other senior on the Shorewomen's roster.  She scored points in both breaststroke events at last year's Centennial Championships.

Hilary Badger (Baltimore, MD/Mount de Sales), Carly Ogren (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock)Samantha Gross (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove), and Laura Prengaman (Berlin, MD/Stephen Decatur) join Miskiel as the team's juniors.  Badger is the Shorewomen's fifth-fastest swimmer ever in the 100 backstroke and seventh-fastest ever in the 50 freestyle. She scored points in both of those events at last year's Centennial Championships.  Ogren is the Shorewomen's 10th-fastest swimmer ever in the 200 freestyle, Gross finished 13th in the 400 individual medley at the 2011 Centennial Championships, and Prengaman has been a contributor in breaststroke and freestyle events.

Washington's sophomore class is comprised of Alicia Howard (Wilmington, DE/Charter School of Wilmington), Ashley Maurizi (Reamstown, PA/Cocalico), Clair Belleveau (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow), and Emily Goodchild (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's). Howard scored points in both breaststroke events at last year's Centennial Championships, while Maurizi was 14th in the 1650 freestyle at the meet. Belleveau contributed in freestyle events, while Goodchild swam backstroke, freestyle, and medley events.

Rounding out the Shorewomen's roster for 2012-13 are three freshmen - Julianna Fritzinger (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion Area), Kelsey McGrellis (Hockessin, DE/A.I. DuPont), and Catelyn McMenamin (Souderton, PA/Souderton Area)

The Shorewomen will open their 2012-13 season Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home meet against Gettysburg.  The fall semester portion of their schedule also includes road dual meets at Salisbury, St. Mary's (MD), and Franklin & Marshall,  home dual meets against Bryn Mawr and Widener, and two days at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational.  After their annual week-long training trip to Key West, FL, in early January, the Shorewomen will host Elizabethtown, Ursinus, and McDaniel, and travel to Dickinson and Swarthmore in the spring semester portion of their schedule.  The Centennial Conference Championship meet will be held at Franklin & Marshall February 22nd-24th.
