Full Selections, Heat Assignments Announced for NCAA Division III Rowing Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Washington College women's rowing team punched its ticket to its seventh consecutive NCAA Division III Championship when the Shorewomen won their seventh consecutive Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) Championship back on April 27th. The Shorewomen now know their full field of competitors and heat assignments at the event as the NCAA held its selection show for the championship Tuesday night.

Joining the Shorewomen as automatic qualifiers in the eight-team field are NESCAC Champion Bates, NEWMAC Champion WPI, and Liberty League Champion Ithaca . Bates is the two-time defending NCAA Division III National Champion and Division III's current top-ranked team. WPI is ranked second, while Ithaca is ranked fourth. The four at-large berths to the championship were awarded to third-ranked Wellesley, fifth-ranked Wesleyan, seventh-ranked Hamilton, and 10th-ranked Pacific Lutheran. 

The 2019 NCAA Division III National Championship will be held Friday, May 31st, and Saturday, June 1st, at Indianapolis Rowing Center. Each team will compete in both the first varsity eight (I Eights) and second varsity eights (II Eights). Both events will begin with two four-boat heats on May 31st. The II Eights heats will be held at 8:12 a.m. and 8:24 a.m., followed by the I Eights heats at 8:36 a.m. and 8:48 a.m. The top two finishing crews in each heat will advance directly to the grand final. The remaining crews will race again on May 31st in their respective repechages with the II Eights repechage to take place at 3:48 p.m. and the I Eights repechage to take place at 4 p.m. The top two finishing crews in the repechages will earn spots in their respective grand finals for places first through sixth, while the other two crews in each repechage will advance to their respective petite finals for places seventh and eight. The II Eights petite final will be held June 1st at 11 a.m. with the grand final to follow at 11:12 a.m. The I Eights petite final will be held at 11:24 a.m. with the grand final to follow at 11:36 a.m. Points are awarded as follows for places first through eighth: 40-37-34-31-28-25-22-19 for the I Eights and 16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2 for the II Eights. The team with the highest combined score across the two events will be the 2019 NCAA Division III Champion. 

The Shorewomen's first varsity eight will race in the 8:36 heat on the 31st against Bates, Wesleyan, and Ithaca. The second varsity eight will race in the 8:12 heat on the 31st against Bates, Pacific Lutheran, and WPI.
