INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The 13th-ranked Washington College women's rowing team punched its ticket to its sixth consecutive NCAA Division III Championship when the Shorewomen won their sixth consecutive Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) Championship back on April 28th. The Shorewomen now know their full field of competitors and heat assignments at the event as the NCAA held its selection show for the championship Monday night.
Joining the Shorewomen as automatic qualifiers in the eight-team field are NESCAC Champion Bates College, Liberty League Champion Ithaca College, and NEWMAC Champion Wellesley College. Bates is the defending NCAA Division III National Champion and Division III's current top-ranked team. Ithaca is ranked second, while Wellesley is ranked fifth. The four at-large berths to the championship were awarded to third-ranked WPI, fourth-ranked Wesleyan University, sixth-ranked Williams College, and eighth-ranked Pacific Lutheran University.
The 2018 NCAA Division III National Championship will be held Friday, May 25th, and Saturday, May 26th, at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla. Each team will compete in both the first varsity eight (I Eights) and second varsity eights (II Eights). Both events will begin with two four-boat heats on May 25th. The II Eights heats will be held at 8:12 a.m. and 8:24 a.m., followed by the I Eights heats at 8:36 a.m. and 8:48 a.m. The top two finishing crews in each heat will advance directly to the grand final. The remaining crews will race again on May 25th in their respective repechages with the II Eights repechage to take place at 3:48 p.m. and the I Eights repechage to take place at 4 p.m. The top two finishing crews in the repechages will earn spots in their respective grand finals for places first through sixth, while the other two crews in each repechage will advance to their respective petite finals for places seventh and eight. The II Eights petite final will be held May 26th at 11 a.m. with the grand final to follow at 11:12 a.m. The I Eights petite final will be held at 11:24 a.m. with the grand final to follow at 11:36 a.m. Points are awarded as follows for places first through eighth: 40-37-34-31-28-25-22-19 for the I Eights and 16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2 for the II Eights. The team with the highest combined score across the two events will be the 2018 NCAA Division III Champion.
The Shorewomen's first varsity eight will race in the 8:36 a.m. heat on the 25th against Bates, WPI, and Wesleyan. The second varsity eight will race in the 8:12 a.m. heat on the 25th against Bates, Wellesley, and WPI.
