Shorewomen Win MARC Championship for Second Time in Three Years

Shorewomen Win Second Varsity Eight, Second in Varsity Eight

YORK COUNTY, PA -- For the second time in three years, the 15th-ranked Washington College women's rowing team has won the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) Championship as the Shorewomen took first place in the overall points standing at today's championship regatta at Gifford Pinchot State Park.

This year's regatta featured a new scoring format to decide the team champion, with points being awarded for the varsity eight and second varsity eight races only. The Shorewomen won the second varsity eight and took second in the varsity eight to finish with a regatta-best 55 points.

In the second varsity eight, the Shorewomen's first-place time was 7:09.1. Mary Washington was second in 7:31.7, Franklin & Marshall third in 7:41.7, and North Park fourth in 7:47.6. Marietta won the varsity eight in 6:31.7. Washington was second in 6:33.5, Franklin & Marshall third in 6:44.9, Mary Washington fourth in 6:45.2, Bryn  Mawr fifth in 6:53.1, and North Park sixth in 6:58.2

Freshman Abigail Thomas (Hughesville, MD/Thomas Stone) was the coxswain of the Shorewomen's second varsity eight.  Sophomore Brittany Krueger (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) sat stroke,  junior Diane Hagmann (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) was in the seven seat, sophomore Rachel Benders (Cleveland Heights, OH/Beaumont School) sat in the six seat, freshman Elizabeth Hilton (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) sat in the five seat, freshman Carly Ogren (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) was in the four seat, freshman Emily Sahadeo (College Park, MD/Elizabeth Seton) was in the three seat, senior Caiti Ambrose (Milmay, NJ/Sacred Heart) sat in the two seat, and senior Robin Heese (Phoenix, MD/Maryvale Prep) was the bow.

Junior Kelsie Jensen (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) was the coxswain of the Shorewomen's varsity eight.  Junior Kendall Mulligan (Southbury, CT/Westover School) sat stroke, senior Sarah Strickland (Potomac, MD/Holton-Arms) was in the seven seat, freshman Valeria DiLisi (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) was in the six seat, sophomore Kate Fiori (Boston, MA/Dana Hall School) was in the five seat, senior Catherine Black (Kimberton, PA/Academy of Notre Dame) sat in the four seat, sophomore Lauren Halla (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) was in the three seat, junior Jenna Moore (Catonsville, MD/Mount de Sales) sat in the two seat, and senior Christine Lynch (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove) was the bow.

The Shorewomen will now await word on a team or at-large eight selection to the 2011 NCAA Division III National Championships. Each region is guaranteed at least one at-large eight or team selection and the Shorewomen entered today's regatta as the top-ranked team and top-ranked eight in the Mid-Atlantic. Selections will be announced on Tuesday, May 10th.
