Shorewomen Hold Off Bears, 8-7

Hubley Scores Three Goals, Assists on Another

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- Visiting Washington College held off host Urisnus College to post an 8-7 Centennial Conference women's lacrosse victory tonight in Collegeville, Pa. The Shorewomen improved to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play with the win, while the Bears fell to 2-8 and 1-2 with the loss. 

The Shorewomen scored two goals in the first 72 seconds of the game as senior midfielder Emily Hubley (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) found sophomore midfielder Alli Dudley (New Windsor, Md./Francis Scott Key) for a goal 24 seconds into the contest and senior attacker Caroline Lovett (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) scored with 28:48 to go in the half. The Bears then scored the next two goals to even the score as Mary Deliberti scored off an assist from Emma Ebert at 27:45 and Kitty Dawson scored with 24:21 showing. The two teams then traded goals as Hubley scored with 22:12 remaining in the first and Deliberti found Dawson for a goal with 19:17 on the clock. The Shorewomen then ran off four straight goals, capped off by a Lovett tally off a Dudley assist to build a 7-3 lead with 7:11 to go in the half. The Bears trimmed the margin to three goals when Dawson scored with 3:58 to go in the period.

Neither team scored again until a free-position shot by Ebert with 18:20 left in the second half sliced the lead to 7-5. Another Dawson goal with 13:16 left got Ursinus all the way back to within a goal at 7-6. The Shorewomen finally got back on the scoreboard when sophomore midfielder Cara Pascarella (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollows Hills East) scored with 5:43 remaining in the game to up the advantage to 8-6. Ursinus cut the lead back to a single goal when Julia Fleming found the back of the net off an Ebert assist with 36 seconds on the clock to make it 8-7. Washington senior defender Liz Godorov (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) won the ensuing draw, however, and the Shorewomen were able to run out the clock without the Bears gaining possession.

Hubley finished the game with three goals and one assist for the Shorewomen, while Lovett had two goals and one assist and Dudley had a goal and an assist. Sophomore goalie Haylee Solomon (Wantagh, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) made seven saves in the win. 

Dawson led all scorers with four goals for the Bears. Ebert had a goal and two assists, while Deliberti had one goal and one assist. Margaret Philbin made 13 saves for the Bears in the loss.

The Shorewomen held a slim 26-24 advantage in shots in the game.

The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Muhlenberg.
