F&M Uses Strong Third Quarter To Best Washington, 59-54

Grundy Totals 18 Points For Washington

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's Anajha Burnett scored a game-high 25 points as the hosts used a 20-7 third quarter to rally from a 33-27 halftime deficit to tally a 59-54 win over visiting Washington College at the Mayser Center in a Centennial Conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon.  The Diplomats improve to 1-7 on the year and 1-3 in the CC, while the Shorewomen drop to 2-3 and 0-2 respectively.

How It Happened
-Washington raced out to a 15-4 lead with 1:58 to go in the first quarter on a pair of Ali Grundy free throws and carried a 16-9 lead into the second quarter.
-The Shorewomen led 27-17 on an Emily Thiemann bank shot with 4:01 left in the second quarter before F&M went on a 10-4 run to cut the lead to 31-27 with 2:47 to go on a three-pointer by Sarah Pisani.
-Grundy would cap the first half scoring on a runner from the right side of the baseline with three seconds to go to give the Shorewomen a 33-27 lead heading into the intermission.  The junior scored WC's last six points of the second quarter and had 13 in the opening 20 minutes.
-The Diplomats would tie the game at 37-37 with 4:13 left in the third quarter on two Shannon O'Connor free throws. 
-O'Connor would give F&M its first lead of the day with 2:53 to go in the third on two from the foul line at 41-39 and then scored a layup 38 seconds later to give the Diplomats a 43-39 lead and led to a Washington timeout.
-The hosts would take a 47-40 lead into the fourth quarter as the Diplomats closed out the third on an 18-3 run and outscored the guests 20-7 in the third.
-Washington would trim the F&M lead to 49-45 with 6:52 to go on a Alexis Krahling jumper.
-Krahling hit two from the stripe with 2:05 to go to cut the F&M lead to 57-54.  Washington forced three misses from F&M, but the hosts got all three rebounds.  Burnett hit two free throws with 18 seconds left to cap the scoring.

For The Shorewomen (2-3, 0-2 CC)
-Grundy (18 points to lead team), Krahling (10 points) and Thiemann (nine rebounds for tops on the squad and sets a personal-best).
-Washington shot 31% (19-for-62) from the floor, 30% (3-for-10) from three-point land and 68% (13-for-19) from the foul stripe.
-Washington held slim advantages in points in the paint (26-24) and second-chance points (12-9).

For Franklin & Marshall (1-7, 1-3 CC)                                                                 
-Burnett (25 points to lead all players), Erica Brown (13 points and 11 rebounds for double-double), Sarah Haddon (game-high five blocks) and O'Conner (three steals to lead all participants).
-The Diplomats shot 35% (21-for-60) from the floor, 24% (4-for-17) from three-point territory and 62% (13-for-21) from the free throw line.
-F&M outscored Washington in bench points, 13-11.

-Grudy has led Washington in scoring in all five games.
-Thiemann is the first WC player to lead the team in boards in multiple games this season.
