Hubley Powers Shorewomen Past Seahawks, 59-46

Senior Piles Up 20 Points, Six Steals in Win

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Senior guard Emily Hubley (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) scored 20 points and swiped six steals to lead host Washington College past visiting St. Mary's College of Maryland, 59-46, in a non-conference women's basketball game this afternoon inside Cain Athletic Center. The Shorewomen improved to 4-6, snapping a four-game losing streak, with the win, while the Seahawks remained winless at 0-7 with the loss.

After the score was tied at 12-12 with 11 minutes to play in the first half, the Shorewomen went on a 13-1 run to build a 25-13 lead on a jumper by freshman forward/center Katherine Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) with 6:11 to play. St. Mary's responded by scoring the next eight points to close the gap to 25-21 on a Matti Vagnoni three-pointer with 1:45 to go before the Shorewomen scored the final four points of the period to take a 29-21 lead into the intermission. 

Sophomore guard Ali Grundy (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) sank a pair of free throws 18 seconds into the second half to increase the Washington lead to 10 points at 31-21. The Shorewomen led by double figures the rest of the way. Junior forward Carley Kendall (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) battled through foul trouble to score 11 points and bring down six boards for the Shorewomen in 18 minutes of play.

Nina Haller was the only Seahawks in double figures in scoring, finishing with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and a pair of blocks. Anna McCleain added game highs of 14 rebounds and three blocks and scored six points before fouling out late in the contest.

The Shorewomen shot 41% from the field in the game while holding the Seahawks to 23% shooting. Washington also held a 50-41 advantage on the boards.

The Shorewomen return to action Saturday, January 3rd, with a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game at Eastern Mennonite.
