Mustangs Pull Away From Shorewomen, 69-36

Kendall 11 Points and Three Blocked Shots

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Host Stevenson got a game-high 15 points from Kyarra Harmon en route to a 69-36 win over visiting Washington College at Owings Mills Gymnasium in a non-conference women's basketball game on Wednesday night.  The Mustangs are now 1-0 on the year, while the Shorewomen fall to 1-2.

The Mustangs raced out to a 12-2 lead just 3:34 into the game on a jumper by Harmon.  The Shorewomen would eight of the next 12 points to trim the Stevenson lead to 16-10 with 13:22 to go in the first half on a bucket by freshman guard Drew Arnett (Washington, D.C./St. Vincent Pallotti (Md.).  The Mustangs would counter with a 15-4 run to push their lead to 31-14 with 6:58 remaining in the opening half on a Stephanie Martinez three-pointer.  However, Washington closed out the half strong on a 16-7 run to trim the Stevenson lead to 38-30.  The Shorewomen got it within six points at 36-30 with 50 ticks left in the first on a jumper by freshman forward/guard Raley Hinton (Kensington, Md./St. John's College H.S. (D.C.).   Harmon scored the last basket of the half on a driving layup with just over a second left.

In the second half, the Mustangs scored the first 10 points of the stanza to take a 48-30 lead on a Ty Bender jumper with 14:28 left in the contest and including the last basket of the first half, it was 12 straight points for Stevenson.  The Shorewomen finally got their first basket of the half with 13:17 left on a Hinton jumper to cut the lead to 48-32.  The hosts would then score the next 21 points to take control of the game at 69-32 with 5:30 to go on a Caitlin Roy bunny.  The Shorewomen scored the final four points to provide the final margin.

In addition to Harmon, two other Stevenson players tallied double figures.  Sara Tarbert added 14 points, while Roy added 12 points.  Bender had seven rebounds, five assists and four steals to lead all players.  Harmon and Tarbert each had three steals, while Tarbert tied for game-high with three blocks.  The Mustangs shot 44% from the floor (28-for-63), 18% from three-point territory (2-for-11) and 73% from the free throw stripe (11-for-15).

Junior forward Carley Kendall (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) had 11 points and three blocks to lead the Shorewomen, while Hinton added 10 points.  Senior guard Emily Hubley (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) had six rebounds to lead to guests, while sophomore guard Daniela Falcone (Potomac, Md./Connolly School of the Holy Child) had three steals to lead the Shorewomen in the contest.  Washington shot 28% from the floor (15-for-53), 15% from three-point range (2-for-13) and 80% from the foul line (4-for-5). 

Stevenson outscored Washington in points in the paint (40-8), points off turnovers (29-11) and transition points (14-0).  The two teams tied in second chance points (13-13), while Washington had the edge in bench points (14-12).  Both teams grabbed 38 rebounds each.

The Shorewomen have their home opener on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. versus City College of New York (CCNY) in a non-conference game.
