Pledger Tallies Double-Double in Loss

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Visiting Haverford College never trailed en route to a 61-47 Centennial Conference women's basketball victory over host Washington College tonight inside Cain Athletic Center. The Fords improved to 18-3 overall and 12-3 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 7-14 and 6-9 with the loss. 

Haverford jumped out to a 13-4 lead with 15:49 to play in the first half. The Shorewomen rallied to cut the margin to 18-15 on a pair of free throws by senior guard Katie Bay (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) with 7:54 left, but the Fords finished the period with five straight points, capped off by Jacquelyne Pizzuto's fourth three-pointer of the half with two seconds to go, to take a 31-21 lead into the intermission. Pizzuto scored 16 points for the Fords in the first half alone. 

Washington trailed by just seven points at 44-37 with just under nine minutes to play in the second half before Haverford broke the game open with a 12-1 run to build a 56-38 cushion on a three-pointer by Elizabeth Lynch with 4:57 to go. The Fords led by at least 14 points the rest of the way.

Pizzuto went scoreless in the second half after scoring 16 points in the first, but still led all scorers on 5-for-7 shooting from the field, including a 4-for-6 mark from three-point range. She also handed out a game-best six assists. Nina Voith added 13 points for the Fords, while Lynch had 10 points and six rebounds. Shannon Smith scored eight points and swatted away a game-high four shots, while Cara Wyant had a team-high 11 rebounds off the bench for Haverford.

Senior forward Latisha Pledger (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) tallied a double-double for Washington in the loss with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Senior guard Kelly Mitchell (Laurel, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) was the only other Shorewoman in double figures, scoring 10 points.

Haverford shot 38% from the field in the game while holding Washington to 27% shooting. Each team grabbed exactly 40 rebounds ion the contest.

The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Ursinus.
