O'Connell Scores Career-Best 10 Points
CARLISLE, Pa. – Visiting Washington College scored the final six points held host Dickinson scoreless over the final 4:29 en route to a 43-38 victory in a Centennial Conference women's basketball game on Wednesday evening at the Kline Center. The Shorewomen improve to 3-8 overall and 2-3 in the Centennial, while the Red Devils fall to 3-8 and 0-6 respectively.
Dickinson led 7-6 with 13:15 left in the first half when Washington scored six straight points to take a 12-7 lead with 10:21 remaining in the first on a layup by senior forward Latisha Pledger (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River). However, Dickinson would score the next 10 points to take a 17-12 lead with 5:40 remaining in the first on a Rachel Sisco jumper in the paint. Sisco also gave the Red Devils the lead for the rest of the first half at 13-12 on a jumper with 6:41 remaining. The Red Devils pushed their lead to 21-14 with 3:37 to go in the half on a Sarah Phillips free throw. The Shorewomen scored five of the last six points in the half to cut the Dickinson lead to 22-19 at intermission.
Dickinson led 29-24 with 14:14 remaining in the second half on a Mary Martin layup when Washington scored seven of the next eight points to take a 31-30 lead with 9:13 left on a layup by junior guard Emily Hubley (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin). It was Washington's first lead in over 17 minutes. There would be one tie and five lead changes over the next seven minutes with Dickinson getting the last lead change in the sequence with 4:29 left on a Jennifer Smith lay-in. The layup would be the final points of the game for the Red Devils.
Dickinson held a 38-37 lead with two minutes to go when Pledger hit a driving layup with 1:38 to go to put Washington back ahead 39-38. Neither team would score for the next 78 seconds before junior guard Jackie O'Connell (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) sank a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left to give Washington a 41-38 lead. Dickinson on the next possession got a three-point attempt from Phillips, but her shot was off the mark with eight seconds remaining and Pledger got the board. She made both from the stripe to give the guests a 43-38 lead with five ticks left and that was the final margin.
O'Connell scored a career-high and game-high 10 points for the Shorewomen. Sophomore forward Carley Kendall (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) tied her career-best with a contest-high 13 rebounds and rejected a game-best three shots. Senior forward Erin Fitzgerald (Greensboro, N.C./Bishop McGuiness) had 11 boards as Washington held a dominating 60-31 advantage on the glass. The Shorewomen shot 22% from the floor (14-for-65), 28% from three-point land (3-for-11) and 80% from the foul line (12-for-15) as the guests had all 18 second chance points in the win.
Smith had nine points, a team-best seven rebounds and handed out a game-high three assists for the Red Devils. Martin tied Smith for team-high in points with nine and also had three steals to lead all players. Dickinson shot 30% from the floor (14-for-47), 13% from three-point territory (1-for-8) and 45% from the free throw stripe (9-for-20).
Washington had six more turnovers than Dickinson, 17-11, but each team scored 11 points off of the other team's turnovers.
The Shorewomen are back at home on Saturday afternoon with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial contest versus Franklin & Marshall.
