Mattox, O'Connell, Pledger Named Shorewomen Basketball Captains

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Senior guard Claire Mattox (Arlington, Va./Potomac School), junior guard Jackie O'Connell (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area), and senior forward Latisha Pledger (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) will serve as the captains of the Washington College women's basketball team for the 2013-14 season.

Mattox has played in all 75 of the Shorewomen's games over her first three seasons, making 40 starts. Last season, she averaged 3.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, and a team-best 1.9 assists per game while making 13 starts. She was named to the 2011 Centennial Conference All-Sportsmanship Team and is a two-sport student-athlete who also plays softball at Washington College.

O'Connell, who also plays field hockey, is another two-sport student-athlete. She will be serving as one of the Shorewomen's captains for the second year in a row. She earned a spot on the 2013 Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll and averaged 2.0 points and 2.2 rebounds while making 17 starts in 24 games during the 2012-13 season. She has played in 42 career games for the Shorewomen.

Pledger is also serving as a team captain for the second year in a row. She was voted an All-Centennial Conference honorable mention last season after finishing second in the conference and 12th in Division III by averaging 12.2 rebounds per game in 2012-13. She is also the Shorewomen's leading returning scorer, having averaged 8.5 points per game a year ago. She has made 51 career starts while playing in all 75 of the Shorewomen's games during her career thus far and has career totals of 689 points and 774 rebounds. She already ranks fourth all-time in career rebounds at Washington College.

The Shorewomen tip off their 2013-14 season tonight at the Gwynedd Mercy Tip-Off Tournament against the host Griffins at 8:00 p.m. They will play either Scranton or sixth-ranked Montclair State in tomorrow's consolation or championship game at noon or 2:00 p.m. This is the Shorewomen's first season under head coach Alisha Mosley, who took over the reins of the program in May.
