Pledger Tallies Ninth Career Double-Double With 19 Points and 13 Boards
CHESTERTOWN, MD – Sophomore forward Latisha Pledger (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) had game-highs of 19 points, on 7-for-10 shooting, and 13 rebounds for her ninth career double-double, and second of the year, as host Washington College topped visiting Wesley, 69-58, on Saturday evening in non-conference women's basketball action at the Cain Athletic Center. The Shorewomen improve to 4-4 overall, while the Wolverines slip to 1-6.
Wesley took a 14-7 lead with 11:02 left in the first half on a Jazmine Miller layup to give the guests its biggest lead of the game. Washington would close out the half on a 30-5 run to turn the seven-point deficit into a 37-19 lead at halftime. A layup by senior guard Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) put Washington up for good at 17-16 with 8:17 left in the half. A three-pointer by sophomore guard Kelly Mitchell (Laurel, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) put the Shorewomen up 28-16 with 4:35 remaining in the first and gave the hosts their first double-digit lead. A free throw by sophomore guard Katie Bay (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) closed out the scoring in the first half with 20 ticks remaining.
In the second half, Washington would build its lead up to 23 points on two occasions. The second one was on a jumper by sophomore guard Claire Mattox (Arlington, VA/Potomac School) with 11:40 remaining in the game to put the Shorewomen up 53-30. Wesley would cut the lead to nine points, 67-58, with 33 seconds left in the game on a Miller three, but Mattox responded with a jumper 16 seconds later for the final points in the contest.
For the victors, Tait and senior guard Sally O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) joined Pledger in the double-figure scoring club with 14 points and 11 points respectively. Tait handed out six assists to lead WC, Mitchell had two steals to lead the hosts and sophomore forward Erin Fitzgerald (Greensboro, NC/Bishop McGuiness) led all players with two blocks. The hosts enjoyed a commanding 55-31 edge on the glass in the game. The Shorewomen shot 38% from the floor, 26% from three-point land and 74% (14-for-19) from the foul line.
Heather Fuller had 12 points to lead Wesley, while Rachelle Allen added 11 points and Aleisha Hobbs chipped in with 10 points. Allen had eight assists to lead all players, while Fuller grabbed a team-best eight boards. Hobbs and Allen each had three steals to lead all participants. The Wolverines shot 36% from the floor, 29% from the behind the arc and 67% (6-for-9) from the charity stripe.
Washington outscored Wesley in points in the paint (26-24), second-chance points (24-15) and bench points (33-13), while Wesley enjoyed the edge in points off of turnovers (21-9) and transition points (6-4). Washington had 13 turnovers in the game, while Wesley had only nine.
The Shorewomen return to the court on December 30 at 4:00 p.m. against St. John Fisher at the CUA/Fairfield Inn Holiday Tournament hosted by Catholic University in Washington, DC.
