Fitzgerald Posts First Career Double-Double In Victory
CARLISLE, PA – Freshman guard/forward Erin Fitzgerald (Greensboro, NC/Bishop McGuiness) had her first career double-double with a career-high 16 points and tied her career-high in rebounds with 10, also a game-best, while establishing a career-high with a contest-high three blocks as visiting Washington College topped host Dickinson College, 67-58, on Saturday afternoon at the Kline Center in Centennial Conference women's basketball action. The Shorewomen improve to 10-10 overall and 8-7 in conference action, while the Red Devils fall to 8-12 and 6-10 respectively.
The Shorewomen sweep the season series with the Red Devils for the first-time ever and have won four straight conference games for the first time since January 23-February 2, 1999. The eight conference wins are the most for a Shorewomen team since the 1998-99 season. Washington also snapped a seven-game losing streak in Carlisle, winning at Dickinson for the first time since a 57-55 win on February 2, 2002.
The Shorewomen entered the second half with a 27-23 lead. Washington led by three points at 29-26 with 18:03 before scoring the next six points to take a 35-26 lead with 16:07 to go on a jumper by junior guard/forward Sally O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic). Alesha Sisco would score the next four points to trim the Washington lead to 51-44 with 5:46 to go, but a layup by sophomore center Erin Kile (Benton, PA/Benton) and a jumper by freshman guard/forward Erin Fitzgerald (Greensboro, NC/Bishop McGuiness) restored the lead to 55-44 with 4:51 remaining. After a Sisco basket, Kile would convert on a traditional three-point play to put the Shorewomen up 58-46 with 4:13 to go.
Dickinson would not go away though as they got back-to-back fast-break layups by Sisco to cut the Washington lead to 58-50 with 3:02 left. Dickinson would cut it to 58-52 with 2:29 to go on a Taylor Miller layup on a feed from Sisco after she got the offensive rebound. O'Donnell would step to the line and hit both free throws to extend the WC lead to 60-52 with 2:06 to go. Carole Dempsey would score on jumper to trim the lead to 60-54 with 1:34 remaining. After a WC miss, Sisco got the rebound, but freshman guard Claire Mattox (Arlington, VA/Potomac School) stole the ball and got the ball to Tait who hit one from the charity stripe to make it 61-54 with 56 seconds remaining. Miller would knock down two free throws to trim the lead to 61-56 with 44 ticks to go. After a Washington turnover, Sisco missed the shot, but Kile grabbed the rebound with 38 seconds left. Tait was fouled and canned both from the charity stripe to give the Shorewomen a 63-56 lead with 33 seconds to go. After two misses by Dickinson from the three-point range, Fitzgerald was fouled and made both free throws to push the lead to 65-56 with 11 seconds remaining. Dempsey scored to make it 65-58 with five seconds left, but freshman guard Kelly Mitchell (Laurel, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) hit both from the line to make it 67-58 with four ticks to go and provide the final margin.
After Dickinson scored the opening two points, Washington scored 15 of the next 17 points to take a 15-4 lead with 11:21 left in the first half on a layup by Kile. WC would take its biggest lead of the half at 24-11 with 5:51 to go on a layup by freshman forward/center Latisha Pledger (Indian River, VA/Chesapeake). The Red Devils would close out the half however on a 12-3 run to cut the lead to 27-23 lead at halftime. Dickinson would get it to as close as three points with 1:09 left on a Dempsey layup.
