Shorewomen Fend Off Bears, 49-41

Tait With 16 Points, Nine Rebounds And Six Assists In Win

CHESTERTOWN, MD – Host Washington College got a team-best 16 points, nine rebounds and a game-high six assists from junior guard Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) en route to a 49-41 win over visiting Ursinus College on Thursday night at the Cain Athletic Center in Centennial Conference women's basketball action.  The Shorewomen, who have won four of their past six, are now 7-10 overall and 5-7 in conference play, while the Bears drop to 11-6 and 8-5 respectively.  The Shorewomen have won of the past five meetings with the Bears.

In a defensive contest, neither team shot well.  Washington shot 24% (11-for-46) from the field while Ursinus shot 21% from the floor (13-for-61).  The Shorewomen went 24-for-33 (73%) from the charity stripe, while the Bears were 11-for-16 (69%) from the free throw line.  Ursinus hit 4-of-13 (31%) from three-point range, while Washington was 3-for-11 (27%) from behind the arc.

Ursinus jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead just 6:18 into the ballgame on a layup by Alex Shivers on a pass from Alli Rosati.  However, the Bears offense would go cold and shoot just 1-for-20 the rest of the half and it allowed the Shorewomen to mount a comeback and outscore Ursinus 18-4 the rest of the first half.  Washington would take its first lead of the half at 13-12 with 9:59 to go in the first half on a free throw by freshman guard/forward Erin Fitzgerald (Greensboro, NC/Bishop McGuiness).  A jumper in the paint by Tait gave the Shorewomen an 18-13 lead with 6:37 to go in the half before the Bears hit their lone field goal in the final 13:42 of the half on a three-pointer by Amber Yacenda to cut the lead to 18-16.  However Washington scored the final four points of the half to take a 22-16 lead into the intermission.

In the second half, the Bears came out strong scoring eight of the first nine points to take a 24-23 lead with 16:55 to go in the game on a Shivers free throw.  Washington would score the next four points to take a 27-24 lead on a layup by freshman forward/center Latisha Pledger (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) with 16:04 to go.  Ursinus countered with an 8-2 run to take a 32-29 lead with 10:39 to go on a Shivers free throw.  With the score tied 34-34, Tait scored on a layup with 7:19 left to put the Shorewomen up for good at 36-34.  Shivers drained a jumper with a 2:11 left to cut the Washington to 41-38, but Tait responded with a jumper in the paint 30 seconds later to give Washington a 43-38 lead.  Jaclyn Hilf canned a trifecta for the Bears with 51 ticks left to cut the Shorewomen lead to 45-41, but Washington hit four free throws in the final 40 seconds to secure the victory.

For Washington, junior guard/forward Sally O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) scored 15 points, while Fitzgerald grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds and blocked a contest-best three shots.  Freshman guard Kelly Mitchell (Laurel, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) had three steals to tie for the game-high.  Washington held a 50-38 edge on the boards in the win.

Shivers scored 17 points for Ursinus to lead all players and also totaled nine rebounds to lead the Bears.  Rosati handed out a team-high three assists and recorded three steals to tie Mitchell for game-best.

Washington returns to action on Monday night with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Franklin & Marshall.
