First Win Over Dickinson Since 2003
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's basketball team broke a 14-game losing streak to Dickinson College with a 52-51 Centennial Conference home win over the Red Devils tonight inside Cain Athletic Center. The win for the first for the Shorewomen (5-8, 3-5 Centennial) over the Red Devils (6-7, 4-5) since February 20003.
With the score tied at 51-51 and with 34 seconds left on the clock, Washington freshman forward Erin Fitzgerald (Greensboro, NC/Bishop McGuiness) converted the first of two free throws to give the Shorewomen a one-point lead. Dickinson's Alesha Sisco missed a jumper with 12 seconds left and WC freshman forward/center Latisha Pledger (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) rebounded the ball and was fouled with eight seconds to go. Pledger missed the front end of the ensuing one-and-one and Ashley Kunkle grabbed the board for Dickinson as the Red Devils called timeout with seven seconds left. Taylor Miller missed a jumper with two seconds to go and a tip-up attempt by Sisco as time expired bounced off the rim as the Shorewomen held on for the win.
Washington held an early 13-8 lead in the game but the Red Devils out-scored the Shorewomen, 20-8 over the final 12 minutes of the first period. Dickinson scored the final seven points of the half and held a 28-21 lead at the intermission.
The Red Devils led, 42-36, with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game before the Shorewomen cut the lead to one on a put-back - with 9:41 to go - and a three-pointer - with 8:36 left - by junior guard Sally O'Donnell (Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic). Kunkle made a pair of free throws with 7:18 remaining to give Dickinson a 44-41 lead, but the Shorewomen scored eight of the next nine points to build a 49-45 lead on a three-pointer by junior guard Meghan Tait (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) with 3:57 left. Dickinson responded by scoring six of the next eight points to knot the score at 51-51 on a lay-up by Taylor Miller with 1:02 left. Sisco fouled Fitzgerald on the Shorewomen's next possession to set up the final sequence.
Tait led the Shorewomen with 14 points, five assists, and five rebounds. Fitzgerald and freshman guard Kelly Mitchell (Laurel, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) each added nine points, while Pledger tallied six points and a game-best 11 rebounds and sophomore center Erin Kile (Benton, PA/Benton) swatted away four shots.
Sisco led all scorers with 16 points and added eight rebounds. Carole Dempsey contributed 14 points, six boards, and two blocks for the Red Devils.
Both teams shot exactly 21-of-57 from the field, though the Shorewomen were 4-for-13 from three-point range, while Dickinson was just 1-for-7. Washington held a 41-38 advantage on the boards, including a 25-17 edge in the second half. The Shorewomen also held a 13-2 advantage in second-chance points.
Washington's last win over Dickinson was a 79-61 win on February 8, 2003.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at McDaniel.
