ST. MARY'S CITY, MD -- The Washington College sailing team finished seventh of eight teams at the Prosser Trophy, the MAISA Team Race Championships, this weekend at St. Mary's College.
Washington finished with a total head-to-head record of 3-11, posting wins over Cornell, Georgetown, and Old Dominion. The top four finishing schools from the double round-robin rounds advanced to the final four. 11th-ranked St. Mary's won the championship with a 13-4 record, seventh-ranked Hobart/William Smith was second at 12-5, fourth-ranked Georgetown was third at 11-6, and 13th-ranked Navy was fourth at 9-8. By virtue of their top-three finishes, St. Mary's, Hobart/William Smith, and Georgetown advance to the ICSA National Team Race Championships, to be held in June.
Senior skipper Mike Whitford (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and freshman crew Eleanor Conroy (West Dennis, MA/Tabor Academy), senior skipper Mildred Conroy (Newton, MA/Tabor Academy) and freshman crew TJ Heist (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City), and sophomore skipper Sam Fitzgerald (Fairfield, CT/Greens Farms Academy) and freshman crew Blair Towers (Goochland, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) started the regatta for Washington. Freshman Ryan Bailey (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) also saw time at skipper, while junior Matt Lawler (Alexandria, VA/Christchurch School) and freshman Dale Strong (Severna Park, MD/Gunston Day School) also saw time as crews.
The Washington College sailing team returns to action next weekend at the America Trophy, the MAISA Co-Ed Dinghy Spring Championships, at Hobart/William Smith and at the MAISA Spring Open, hosted by Navy.
