NEW LONDON, CT -- The Washington College sailing team finished tied for eighth among 12 teams at the Southern New England Team Race, hosted by Connecticut College, this weekend.
Washington went 5-6 in head-to-head races on Saturday, placing the team in eighth place after the first day. The top six placing teams on Saturday raced each other on Sunday, while the bottom six, including Washington, also squared off against each other. On Sunday, Washington went 1-4 to finish with a total race record of 6-10. Top-ranked Yale won the regatta, followed by 10th-ranked Hobart/William Smith and sixth-ranked College of Charleston tied for second.
Seniors Mike Whitford (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and Mildred Conroy (Newton, MA/Tabor Academy) and sophomore Sam Fitzgerald (Fairfield, CT/Greens Farms Academy) were Washington's skippers at the regatta. Freshmen TJ Heist (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City), Dale Strong (Severna Park, MD/Gunston Day School), Blair Towers (Goochland, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield), and Mackenzie Needham (Shelter Island, NY/Shelter Island) and junior Matt Lawler (Alexandria, VA/Christchurch School) served as crews.
The Washington College sailing team returns to action next weekend at the Prosser Trophy, the MAISA Team Race Championships, hosted by St. Mary's.
