Washington College Sailing Wins 2-on-2 Team Race

Washington Also Sixth at John Jackson Team Race

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The host Washington College sailing team won the Washington College 2-on-2 Team Race held yesterday and today on the Chester River. Washington also placed sixth of eight teams at Georgetown's John Jackson Team Race this weekend.

Washington finished the Washington College 2-on-2 Team Race with a 14-2 record, taking first place after beating Pennsylvania (13-3) in the final race. Villanova, William & Mart, and Princeton rounded out the field. Twenty-six races sailed on Saturday and the remaining 14 sailed on Sunday as four full round robins were completed. Winds ranged from five to 15 knots both days.

Freshman skipper Eleanor Conroy (West Dennis, MA/Tabor Academy) and sophomore crew Erin McAuliffe (Germantown, MD/Good Counsel) and junior skipper Sam Bedinger (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) and sophomore crew Jiwoo Lee (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) sailed for Washington on Saturday. Freshman skipper Mackenzie Needham (Shelter Island, NY/Shelter Island) and McAuliffe and Bedinger and freshman crew Blair Towers (Goochland, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) sailed on Sunday. 

At the John Jackson Team Race, Washington finished with a 6-8 record in the two round robins. During the second round robin, Washington posted four head-to-head wins, including victories over fourth-ranked Georgetown and ninth-ranked St. Mary's. 18th-ranked Connecticut College won the regatta, followed by 19th-ranked New York Maritime in second and Rhode Island in third. St. Mary's, Washington, Cornell, and Boston University rounded out the field.

Senior skipper Mildred Conroy (Newton, MA/Tabor Academy) and freshman crew TJ Heist (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City), senior skipper Mike Whitford (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and freshman crew Dale Strong (Severna Park, MD/Gunston Day School), sophomore skipper Sam Fitzgerald (Fairfield, CT/Greens Farms Academy) and junior crew Matt Lawler (Alexandria, VA/Christchurch School), and freshman skipper Ryan Bailey (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) sailed for Washington at the John Jackson Team Race.

The Washington College sailing team returns to action next weekend at the Team Race Challenge, hosted by Merchant Marine.
