ANNAPOLIS, MD -- The Washington College sailing team finished ninth of 18 teams at the War Memorial, the MAISA Fall Co-Ed Dinghy Championships, hosted by Navy this weekend.
Senior skipper Mike Whitford (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) drove Washington to a fifth-place finish in A Division. Whitford sailed with freshman crew Dale Strong (Severna Park, MD/Gunston Day School) for the first four A Division races and with sophomore crew TJ Heist (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) for the remaining 14. Whitford skippered Washington to top-six finishes in 10 of the division's 18 races, winning two.
Washington finished 10th in B Division. Senior skipper Mildred Conroy (Newton, MA/Tabor Academy) raced in B Division for the first two and final 12 races, while freshman skipper Ryan Bailey (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) sailed the third through sixth B Division races. Junior crew Matt Lawler (Alexandria, VA/Christchurch School) sailed in the first four and final 10 B Division races, while sophomore Sam Fitzgerald (Fairfield, CT/Greens Farms Academy) was the crew for the fifth through eighth B Division races.
Seventh-ranked Georgetown won the War Memorial, followed by ninth-ranked St. Mary's in second and fourth-ranked Hobart/William Smith in third. Eight races sailed in each division on Saturday, which saw high winds, rain, sleet, snow, and fog. The remaining 10 races in each division sailed on Sunday under sunny skies and lighter winds.
Next weekend, the Washington College sailing team will compete at the SAISA/MAISA regatta, hosted by the College of Charleston.
