WC Finishes 18th at Anderson Trophy, Has Three Sailors Compete at Two Single-Handed Regattas
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College sailing team opened its 2011-12 season with team members competing at three regattas this weekend. Washington finished 18th of 20 teams at Yale's Anderson Trophy, had two sailors finish 13th and 19th, respectively, in a 20-sailor fleet at the Laser South, hosted by Navy, and had another sailor place 15th of 17 at the Navy Women's Radial Open.
At the Anderson Trophy, Washington was 19th in A Division and 15th in B Division. Senior skipper Mike Whitford (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) drove WC in A Division in the first eight races, while freshman skipper Dan Ricker (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) raced in races nine and 10.
In B Division, senior skipper Mildred Conroy (Newton, MA/Tabor Academy) sailed races one through four and seven through 10, while Ricker sailed races five and six. Sophomore PJ Miller (Lawrenceville, NJ/Notre Dame) and junior Matt Lawler (Alexandria, VA/Christchurch School) were crews in A and B Divisions, respectively. Conroy and Lawler finished first in the third B Division race and second in the ninth B Division race.
Wisconsin won the Anderson Trophy, followed by 10th-ranked Harvard in second and fifth-ranked host Yale in third. Ten races sailed in each division.
At the Laser South, sophomore Sam Fitzgerald (Fairfield, CT/Greens Farms Academy) finished 13th, while freshman Dale Strong (Severna Park, MD/Gunston Day School) was 19th. Georgetown's Chris Barnard won the regatta, Pennsylvania's Michael Russom was second, and John Wallace of St. Mary's was third.
At the Navy Radial Open, freshman Mackenzie Needham (Shelter Island, NY/Shelter Island) placed 15th. Navy's Mary Hall won the regatta, Hampton's Giuditta Di Laghi was second, and Navy's Marissa Lihan was third.
Light conditions in Annapolis all weekend limited the Laser South to nine races and the Navy Women's Radial Open to eight races.
Next weekend, the Washington College sailing team is scheduled to compete at Merchant Marine's Nevins Trophy and Ocean County's Central Fall #1.
