Cranford & Papen Win at No. 2 Doubles
FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- Host Mary Washington, the 23rd-ranked team in Division III and fifth-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, downed visiting Washington College, the region's 12th-ranked team, 8-1, in a non-conference men's tennis matc h this afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA.
In doubles, Mary Washington's Kaz Murata and Riley Baver downed senior Kristian Wilson (Germantown, PA/home school) and freshman Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]), 8-1, at No. 1. Washington senior Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and junior Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) picked up the Shoremen's point with a 9-8(7) win over Will Apperson and Andrew Frisk at No. 2. Kevin Aquino and Alex Blakhin defeated junior Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) and junior John Menzione (Chadds Ford, PA/Kennett), 8-6, at No. 3.
In singles, Murata, ranked 13th in the region, defeated Cranford, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1, Apperson beat Papen, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2, and Blakhin bested Cywinski, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3. Baver added a 6-3, 7-5, victory over Ellison at No. 4, Aquino downed freshman Nicolas Campisi (Santa Rosa, Argentina/Highland [UT]), 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5, and Eric Coltabiano was a 6-4, 6-4, winner against Menzione at No. 6.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Dickinson.
