Washington Downs Hampden-Sydney, 5-1, Sweep Muhlenberg, 9-0
CHESTERTOWN, MD – The Washington College men's tennis team posted a pair of wins today inside the Johnson Fitness Center. The Shoremen, who are ranked 12th in the Atlantic South region, opened the day with a 5-1 win over Hampden-Sydney, ranked 11th in the region. The Shoremen then improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in Centennial Conference play with a 9-0 win over Muhlenberg.
Against Hampden-Sydney, the Shoremen jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles. Juniors Kevin Papen (Dover, DE/Caesar Rodney) and Aaron Ellison (Largo, FL/St. Petersburg) were 8-4 winners over Rich Pugh and Tal Covington at No. 1, while senior Adam Cranford (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) and freshman Marc Cywinski (Brisbane, Australia/Pendleton [FL]) beat Kevin Calhoun and Shad Harrell and juniors Kyle Lisco (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and John Menzione (Chadds Ford, PA/Kennett) bested Zach Pack and Ian Sammler by identical 8-2 finals at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.
Hampden-Sydney picked up a point when Covington beat Lisco by retirement after holding a 3-2 lead in the first set at No. 4 singles. Cranford blanked Pugh, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 and Ellison downed Calhoun, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 3 to finish the match, which was only played to decision.
Against Muhlenberg, Ellison and Papen posted an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles against Robbie Goldwein and Jordan Rutt, while Cranford and Cywinski won by the same score against Andrew Brod and Ari Nutovits at No. 2. Freshman Nicolas Campisi (Santa Rosa, Argentina/Highland [UT]) and Menzione added an 8-1 win against Ben Berkowitz and Jason Teitelbaum at No. 3.
In singles, Cranford blanked Rutt, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1, Papen beat Goldwein, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 2, and Ellison downed Teitelbaum, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3. Cywinski, freshman Joel Novick (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township), and Campisi all won pro sets by an 8-2 final at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 against Nutovits, Berkowitz, and Ben Cohen, respectively.
The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Ursinus.
